Hello from Hawaii!

Postby chcknggt » Mon Aug 11, 2014 7:23 am

Hi!
I'm 15 from Honolulu Hawaii. Currently I own two budgies who are two years old, they aren't hand tamed and are fully flighted. I used to have a lovebird named Izzy who was killed by our Boston Terrier this year; she was stealthy and extremely efficient at running, while I had to go into the kitchen she made a dash for down stairs to where are dogs were eating in their crate and our Boston escaped and attacked her. I miss her a lot, she was extremely smart and brave. The same day I taught her how to spin around.

I've come here to learn more about Senegals and or Meyers specifically since I'm planning on getting one by next year hopefully (I need to find a breeder), until then I'll be researching and collecting enough money for every essential thing and anything else (my goal: at least $680).

And maybe along the way this year I might plan to get a Cockatiel or Lovebird, but it will be extremely hard replacing Izzy. Plus, school is starting pretty soon so I'll have to see how much I'll be able to handle. I'm in no rush getting a bird, right now I have some personal things that need to be taken care of.

Anyways, I'm glad I joined this forum and I can't wait to continue my research and try help out in this community! WOO :danicing: !

So sorry for your loss but it seems to me that your bird must have been clipped and, with dogs in the house, that's a very dangerous thing to do to a bird. If this is the case, please reconsider for your future birds because grounded birds are sitting ducks for dogs.

She was clipped. She was clipped extremely bad by the pet store she was in (they decided just to cut her wings straight across instead of pulling out her wings and cutting her flight feathers). Her wings were finally growing out as well as she started gliding much better.

And for my future birds it is going to be a requirement before I bring them home, mostly because I plan to teach them how to recall and to boost them physically and mentally.

Excuse me, but I am not understanding your last statement. You are unclear as to what will be a requirement for future birds before you bring them home. Please clarify this for me.

I'm sorry for the confusion. I am requesting that my future parrots will be fully flighted when they are brought home.

Senegals :senegal: are slightly larger, and have more colors than Meyers' :meyers: . They are close relatives, so personality-wise you need to check out the individual birds. Senegals are reputed to be more aggressive and more difficult to socialize than Meyers', but from what I hear on this forum, the difference between sexes may be greater than the one between the two species. And the difference between individuals greater than that. Cage and space requirements, as well as feeding and healthcare costs are essentially the same.

They can both learn to talk if they want to, but they have soft speaking voices, so you have to listen closely. They both shriek equally loudly when they want you to fix something (Sennies might be louder from the larger lung size), but either has to be close to make my ears ring, unlike a CAG or a macaw. And I know my little Corsair will sometimes shriek when she really enjoyed some activity.

Either one is capable of biting hard enough to draw blood, but not to break bones. They have very sharp beaks that can do a lot of soft tissue damage if provoked. The trick is to avoid being bitten. Allowing them the option to fly away helps.

In my area, it's a lot easier to find a Senegal than a Meyer's.

My Meyer's is a sweet little hen who loves me and my husband, tolerates my kids, teases dogs and cats if she gets a chance, and may be the easiest bird to keep ever.
