Postby Paco » Thu Aug 21, 2014 9:30 am

:macaw: Hi Is It Normal for My blue And gold macaw that is 5 yrs. old to keep regurgitating all the time?
Paco is a bird we rehomed about 2 weeks and 2 days. He came from a couple that just had moved in together. Paco use to just live with his male owner. He had him for 3 yrs. by himself. His Previous owner be for him kept. Paco in the basement for 2 years with no exclamation to how he was treated in that persons home, beside he lived in the basement. When The Couple moved in together The owners girlfriend had children other animals, This happened 3 months ago and then we purchased Paco to try and retrain him and give him a loving home. While Paco was with the newly moved in couple Paco started having behavioral problems Screaming over and over, and hanging by one foot on the ceiling of his cage. He would continually keep regurgitating. The girlfriend also was very frightened of him also. We now have him and would like any advice we can get to help poor paco & Our Ears. Ha! Ha!
:macaw: I am Sorry I Made A Mistake About Paco The owner before The Last Owner Did Not have Him In A Basement. That was another bird the couple hade sorry!

Macaws regurgitate because of two reasons, Sickness and Love.
Is Paco regurgitating on you, anyone else, or just in random places?

He does it everywhere and anywhere and like to do it on his left wing shoulder most of the time! Is he hormonal too maybe? :macaw:

Macaws become sexually mature at 2 to 3 years of age but they only start mating in the wild when they are 4 or 5 years old so, if what you see is, indeed, regurgitation and not vomiting (regurgitation is when they bob their head up and down and carefully deposit their 'offering' somewhere - vomiting is an obviously involuntary action which leaves them with a mess all over their face and/or chest), it's because he is overly hormonal. Screaming is another symptom of this and, taking into consideration that he was obviously neglected, that he has been on his lonesome for years and that he was, most likely, kept at a human light schedule with no exposure to twilight (kind of impossible in a basement) - and I think we can safely add on a bad diet, the result is a sexually frustrated bird that is desperate for relief and company so, please, don't hold it against him because the poor thing is suffering and he has no other way of letting you know.

Now, first thing to do is put him on a fresh food diet and reduce the protein (which should be fed only for dinner) and to put him on a solar schedule (this is the perfect time of the year for this as the days are now getting shorter). Then establish firm routines and that means everything exactly the same, at the same time - meaning EVERY SINGLE DAY. Aside from that, love, love, love and attention, attention, attention, hours out of cage and a couple of one-on-one. He needs to realize this is not a temporary thing and that the terrible life he had before is over for good and, for that, he needs consistent routines and schedules. I would also start target training in another three or four weeks. 15 minute sessions, three times a day will do it.

But mind you, he is still on the honeymoon stage and things will get worse before they get better- and it might take months and months for him to stop screaming

Pajarita, do you think lily is still in the honeymoon phase, just a week or two ago we moved her cage to a new room, And she is now More cuddly, Comfortable, full of attitude, and Vindictive. She still does not look completely at home. She is most comfortable on her cage, but will occasionally come down on her own for a cuddle and a treat.

The famous honeymoon stage is not a specific number of days or even weeks, it depends on the species, the kind of home they came from, how old they are, how long they were in their previous home, whether they had one or more homes, how steady the routines are in the new home, where the cage is placed, the amount of interaction, whether the people know what they are doing or not, if there are other birds in the new home, if there were other birds in the previous home, etc. Usually, we say it's from one to two months but only because this is the average period a bird takes to show their true colors, some birds can take longer and some less time.

But I doubt that Lilly is 'vindictive' -LOL- although it's a good word to describe certain actions when we look at them from a human point of view. Parrots are never vindictive, in my personal opinion, it might look to us as if they were but they are not because that would imply they are aggressive and spiteful and they are neither. Most likely, the actions that make you think she is vindictive are more meant as protection (kind of like 'I know you are going to do ----- to me and I don't want you to so I am letting you know in advance') than an actual desire to punish anybody for a previous action.

I guess that could be it, but it all started when my mother tried to force lily into her carrier cage.
( i thought it was unnecessary because we only wanted her in their to come downstairs. )
Now lily gives my mother the cold shoulder.

There is only one time or reason to force a bird to do anything and that is in an emergency situation in order to save their life. At no other time should it be even considered.
