Hello from Venezuela!

Postby Periquita » Sun Aug 24, 2014 10:40 pm

Hi hi there, greetings from Venezuela, home of beautiful birds and parrots! :amazon:
I'm so pleased to find this wonderful forum and community!

I want to share some culture, over here it's really common having parrots and parakeets. I believe it is because in -pretty much- every tree, you find all kinds of birds and parrots. Unfortunately, this brings up the subject of illegal sales of parrots (which is pretty much the way to get them) and also that they fall off their nests (meaning even if you find it and take care of it, it would still be illegal to own them).

Even thou that's the way things have been in like forever, there's this new generation that has learned how wonderful they are, including me.

I've adopted over 4 birds, from people who could no longer take care of them, which means I have quite a flock haha, all in the best interest of them. Anyways, I'm happy to meet all of you, for I know you all consider your bird companions as family, as I do. :]

Well here's some pictures to lighten up the mood..

Bienvenida, Periquita! That's a Tovi conure, isn't it? I've never seen one as a pet before.

Thanks again! And, to tell the truth I'm not sure.. I know their names in spanish (since it is of course my native language). The first one wearing a christmas outfit is what you would call a "Cotorra", which looks a lot like an Amazon Parrot, even thou I'm not sure if it is an Amazon sub-species..

The smaller birds in the second picture are Orange-Chinned Parakeets.

Both are great birds! The first one is called Rita and is such a spoiled baby, she loves to fly to the kitchen and get treats, also she knows some basic tricks like "wings", "wave", "shake" and so! I have a video, I'm just not sure how to upload it.. *blushes

Orange chinned parakeet also known as Tovi Parakeet, Brown shouldered Parakeet and Beebee Parakeet.

Cotorra is also part of the Latin name for one of the sub species of Monk Parakeet, and this is definitely not a Monk.

Regardless, they are beautiful birds. Thanks for sharing them.

Yes, orange-chinned is also known as Tovi. Cotorra is a common name and not a species, it's what we call conures or parrots in South America (it depends on the country, we use it only for conures but, in Venezuela and other countries, they use it for amazon parrots, too) so it could be any of a number of species.

Oh well thank you! Now I know the other name of my orange-chinned!
And probably the reason you don't see Tovis as pets is because they are a wild species, the ones I have fell of their nests in different periods of time (yes, all three of them) and I took them in. So it's not a pet you can but at a store.

Additionally well.. They are some TOUGH little birds, meaning they tend to have an aggressive behavior. It's really hard to have a good relationship with one, they tend to bite you and/or run away from you. But I've managed to tame and be loved by 2 out of three so I think it can be done haha.
