Why my cockateil died

Postby ejo123 » Wed Aug 27, 2014 11:34 pm

Dear doctor, i am from Mumbai, india, here there is a derth of Avian doctors. My cockatiel " Ejo" died yesterday due to wrong treatment.I am in a state of shock and depression. If you guide me through tis, i will be more than grateful is all i can say.

My bird's voice pitch had become zero, slowly in a weeks time, it panted, with wheezing sound, whole night. The Avian vet said it had fever and infection, refusing to give any further details, gave Ejo 2 injections for both. In prescription he mentioned that i give imediately on reaching home 2 drops each of Phexin, Mcam(i donno or mlam) morning evening & also calcimax, a to z syrup mixed in water. Honey to eat.

When i gave the above, my bird started bleeding from bottom, and struggled badly all night and died in the morning, i am clueless as to what happened exactly. Please please share what exactly could have happened and was there any way to stop it.What exactly went wrong

I am sorry to hear of the loss of your friend and I wish that I could answer your questions, but I do not know enough to do so, perhaps Pajarita will be able to shed some light on this and help you understand.

I am very sorry for your loss but your bird did not die from what the vet gave him. Phexin is the same as our Cephalexin which is an antibiotic normally used for soft tissue bacterial infections (mostly skin as in wounds) but it can also be used for respiratories and digestives only it's not normally the first choice for them. The other two things were meloxicam (an anti-inflammatory and the only pain killer normally used for birds) and calcium which, apparently, the vet found your bird needed. None of these things could have caused his death. Going by the symptoms you describe, your bird was very, very sick and had been sick for many days before he got treatment so, taking into consideration that birds don't usually show any signs of diseases until they are very sick, I would say he was way too far gone by the time you took him to the vet.

What disease he had is impossible to tell without a necropsy and tissue samples sent for cultures but, off the top of my head and going by the fact that, apparently, the infection started in his respiratory system and moved to the digestive, I would say it was chlamydiosis. Mind you, I am just guessing here.
