Howdy from Mississippi;

Postby Peyton » Tue Sep 23, 2014 10:13 am

I still have a month before I get my new addition to our family. I am in sponge mode trying to gather all the facts although I understand there is a certain individuality to each bird. :gray:

Welcome to the forum Peyton!

Indeed parrots are very much individuals. However, there are generalizations you can make. Any parrot will need a cage or space commensurate with its size. They need fresh water daily. Food twice a day.

If you have a "dusty" bird like a cockatoo or an african gray, you will want an air filter to help you keep up, and to avoid lung problems in susceptible people.

There are long lists of things to be purged from the household because they can kill parrots on the internet. Here is a sample:

Febreze air fresheners, sprays, etc
Candles with wire in the wicks
Teflon pots, pans, bread machines, irons, etc.
Caustic cleaners.
Lots more

See, there are lots of things you can do to keep busy until your new buddy gets home!

These things kill more parrots off the internet than on it. (sic )

True enough there are a lot of bird proofing tasks that can be done well in advance of the birds arrival.

We have been busy shopping and even making toys. We have two big cages (one is in the extra bedroom for sleeping and one in the family room. We did get an air purifier for his room and a rabbit air one for the living room. We are currently shopping for a safe set of pots n pans. We are very excited. I just finished another great book and can't wait to get started.
