Parrot Eye Problem

Postby Stormy » Tue Sep 30, 2014 11:14 am

Hi, I was in the house when I heard my parrot drop on the cage floor and start to struggle.

I quickly realized he had managed to get one of his right toes stuck in his right eye socket somehow (bottom part the one swollen). (He often scratches his head with his claws.) He couldn't pull it out no matter how much he struggled, so I had to get my father to hold him while I pulled it out and now the area is swollen as shown in the picture. I don't think he directly hit the eye but I'm not sure now.

Has anything like this ever happened and what to do about it?

Hmmm, his claws must be too long for this to happen (I can't tell in the picture). Does he have good perches or just dowels? As to what to do about his eye, get yourself some erythromycin ophthalmic ointment and apply it twice a day until the swelling goes down BUT if you don't see a difference in two or three days, he will have to go to an avian vet.

This would be the model of his cage with different mirror so he can stand near it.

Yeah I would say he has long claws.

Pretty cage, with a couple of bread ties would make a good travel cage with new perches made from tree branches. How big is it?
It also looks like you free feed seeds, which is not a good thing. Your bird needs to have fresh vegetables and fruits in abundance.

32.5 x 49 cm

He does get fed fresh fruits and vegetables not just seeds. The image above is just a model from the store so it doesn't contain those.

Sorry about that, but I am only able to respond to what you say or show me and the picture had two feeders full of seeds. I am glad that you are feeding more than just seeds and are supplying veggies and fruit for your bird, but I still hope that you are not free feeding seeds.
There are two reasons for overgrown nails and/ or beaks and they are diet and inadequate means to sand them down and that means perches and things to chew up and shred.

Well, I am sorry to say that the cage is not good. The measurements you gave (32.5 x 49 cm) are the equivalent of 12 x 19 inches and, going by the picture, I assume 19 is the height and 12 the diameter. This makes for a super small cage (my male canaries are housed in rectangular cages that are 76 cm x 53 cm x 45 cm) which is not good for them (canaries need width because they are horizontal fliers but budgies need also height because they are climbers), it's round and birds should never be kept in round cages (yes, they still sell round cages but they also still sell round aquariums even tough we know fish become disoriented in them), it messes up their spatial perception and does not allow for a solid back (cage against a wall) which gives them a feeling of safety.

There is no room in there for nothing but a perch (if you put two, he would not be able to fully open his wings) so you need to get him a bigger and better cage as soon as possible. The perches should be tree branches (good for their toes, feet and legs) and spaced out in such a way that they bird needs to flap his wings to go from one to another but, before you put him in it, clip his nails a bit (not so much that you would cut into the quick, mind you). And make sure he is not getting seeds in a cup for all day long eating, he needs cooked whole grains mixed with chopped veggies and lots of leafy greens like romaine lettuce, escarole, raw broccoli, etc (they love, love, love greens and need them for good health).
