Hi from Boston, Massachusetts

Postby Regina1956 » Tue Nov 04, 2014 10:00 pm

I'm the owner of a beautiful little parakeet. His name is Cameron. I must say he owns us as we didn't buy him. One day in June I found him sitting in front of my front door. What a little miracle. He brings us such joy. I'm so happy he found us.

I don't want to rain on your parade but did you do anything about trying to find the owner of this bird? As a bird owner, myself, I can say that we get very attached to our birds and I am sure that the owner is/ was pulling their hair out over their bird escaping. It is also hard on the bird having to adjust to a new environment and a new human. That being said, I thank you for your caring heart and for taking this little one in and keeping it safe and I do hope that this all works out for the best and in the birds favor. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum, Regina and Cameron (such a big name for such a little bird, very cute!). Please consider getting him a companion, they really need the 24/7/365 company, it enriches their life tremendously and reduces the inevitable stress brought on by captivity.

Hi Wolf, yes, I took a picture of Cameron and brought it down to our local animal shelter and explained the situation. I also posted an ad in our local newspaper. I know if it was my bird that was lost, I would hope someone would reach to try to find the owner. No one came forward. I would never keep a parakeet if I didn't at least try to finder his owner. I found him June 25th. He is such a big part of the family now. I love him very much.

Hi Pajarita, I have discussed getting a companion for Cam with my husband. I want him to be happy. I hope he is now but you are right, he would be very happy with a companion. Thank you for writing.

I am sorry that I had to ask if you tried to find the prior owner, but I would have been wrong to not have asked. I am very glad that he found his way to a loving home where he will be well cared for and will be happy to assist in whatever way that I can.

I'll be honest with you, although I do believe that some individuals in the larger species could be content with a human companion (under very special circumstances like the person not working outside the house, not having any significant social life, etc), I do not believe that any of the small species is without a bird companion. I have seen birds that their owners claim are deeply bonded to them and happy in their 'uneven' relationship that were ecstatic when given a bird companion. Our interpretation of happy is not the same as a bird's...

I love my Cameron very much and will do anything to make sure he is happy. I'm all for getting a companion for him. Does the introduction consist of introducing them to each other slowly? I have gerbils also and they must be introduced slowly to each other. I have instruction books that help but speaking to people who have experience with birds is a great help. Thanks to the both of you for any advice you can offer.

I've never had a single problem with budgies, they always like each other - but you do have to quarantine the new bird for 30 days to make sure she is healthy.
