Hello, from down under!

Postby Roonil Wazlib » Mon Nov 10, 2014 7:35 am

Hi Guys, Its nice to be here :)
I can't introduce my flock because i don't have one yet :hatching:
Next year in November/December i hope. Though i still must convince the bf.
Been watching Michaels videos on yt and found them amazing, so here i am, hoping to fill my noggin with lots of good information in time for a possible parrot kid next year.

I'll be posting a big long sepal about my lifestyle in the parrot specks section - hope its the right section, as I'm unsure of the type of bird i should get, so i''m turning to you guys.

Currently thinking a Blue-crowned/mealy amazon, but i may just be taking too much on, as ive only ever had a budgie before...and that was seven years ago... Problem is - according to the bf, if and when we do get one, i'm not allowed to get another, at least not for a long time, which is fair enough, so the problem I'm facing is i want a larger bird (really wanting to be able to take it out on a harness, and form a close bond with a higher intelligence) i don't want to compromise and get a smaller one because in still basically a nubie, (which i totally would do, if i had the option to get a larger one after i feel more comfortable) only to possibly end up feeling a little underwhelmed and disgruntled by the fact that i can no longer get a larger bird :/

anyway, looking forward to meeting new people :) xo hoping to make many friends :danicing:

Welcome to the forum but, my dear, you are going at it with the wrong mind set because, when it comes to parrots, size is not directly related to intelligence, depth of bonding or anything... for example, Senegals are highly intelligent, they bond super deeply with their human (to the point that they are very jealous of anybody/birdie that you might pay attention to) and they are quite small - almost a cockatiel size! (I have my hen sitting on my shoulder and she is cuddling/leaning against the side of my neck as I type this after kissing me for minutes - and my male is not only one of the best talkers I've ever had but also an excellent cognitive speaker - I actually have conversations with this bird). On the other hand, I have an African gray which doesn't say a single word, perches only on my head and hardly ever gives a kiss. It's not size, it's each individual's personality and brains! Besides, smarts is not everything... some of my birds are not the sharpest knife in the drawer but they are still eminently lovable.

ah, see. That's why i need you guys *Lovelovelove* *tears up the internet :P* are senegals big enough for harness? That's one of Michaels birds, isn't it?
I'll do some research on them :)

How sweet they your babies sound! That's so cute. I'd love to be able to teach them to talk and have snuggles :)

Like you I am in Australia where we seem to be spoiled for choice and similarly I am currently without bird, although we are eagerly awaiting its arrival in the next few weeks.

The only advice I have for you at this time is that I think it is important for everyone in the house to be "on board" with the whole parrot ownership thing, because at some point you may not be able to tend to it as required, or you may need to adjust your lifestyle somewhat.

Your BF either needs to be a willing participant, or you need to do some research into replacement BF's and then begin to determine which species will best suit your family/lifestyle as different species have different personalities and even then there are always exceptions.

Cheers

Haha, Holden

Dont worry, i won't go ahead with it unless the bf is happy with it. We aren't in the right place at the moment to get one, but hopefully this time next year, depending on circumstances he will give me the green light.

:D :D

:) he/she will be my parrot kid. Even though i don't expect the possibility of getting a bird until next year. (its like i'm preggo - cept the bun isn't in my oven :swaying: ) since all the research, i just don't consider a bird a pet, like i do my cats, as much as i love them - its a whole different kettle of fish :P

Already I'm planning on so many things, such as two indoor cages so i can rotate them (and in different places) so my parrot kid doesn't become too territorial about his cage and space - his/her travel cage also be a sleep cage in the quietest room/s in the house (i did consider our bedroom for a hot minuet, but then *ahem* he/she might learn some uh...choice sounds that id prefer not to share with the rest of the family...)

I'm planning on attaching the biggest aviary we can afford to make to the house on a window, so he/she can choose to be out, soaking up the sun and fresh air, so be inside with me. I plan on taking him/her with me everywhere i can on a harness so he/she not in a cage, and getting as much socialization as possible. Its not a light decision that I've made in wanting a fid. I've wanted one since i lost my budge in school about seven years ago, and its only now that I'm seeing the best possibility in years that we might be able to accommodate one.

I is so excited for the possibility :) Hence why I'm already on this lovely forum, getting as much information as i can xx

Good idea. I have had the same idea but just have not pulled it off yet. My Cockatiels can't get through one inch chicken wire. I had planed to build an aviary attached to a window in the sun room so they can be in or out as they wish.

Please put your location in the information box.

I am happy to see that you are not thinking of a parrot as a pet because, in truth, they are not. Pets adjust to our lifestyles and, with training, become easy to keep while, with parrots, we adjust to them and they never really become 'easy'.
