Hello!

Postby Saber » Sat Mar 14, 2015 8:31 pm

I'm new the forums (obviously lol) and wanted to say hi :) I have a congo african grey named Scooty. I adopted him from a breeder that was going to have him euthanized because one of his parents had bitten one of his toes off. Thats a whole differnet story for another time...needless to say I wanted to inflict sever harm to those people. I took Scooty in and treated his toe and raised him like any other baby. He did scoot around in a silly manner due to his toe which is what earned him his name :) As he grew his scooting went away and most people don't even notice his missing toe. He uses his foot like normal and holds nuts and food jsut like any other parrot. Now, 10 years later I have no regrets and he is one of my best buddies. Scooty gets along really well with my other "kids" - a dog (Saber), cat (Seti), ferret (Ka'Tesh) and my saltwater reef tank which he just occasionally whacks his beak against when the yellow foxface swims near him... Scooty doesn't seem to care for him haha...or maybe he does and is just saying "hi", who knows.

I found this forum after watching several youtube videos from the Parrot Wizard. I was looking at buying a new King's cage and was trying to find some decent reviews. I did end up purchasing it this evening. Its the 406 - 1" Bar Space European Napoleon 45 3/8"W x 29"D x 72"H one in black/silver. It's going to be a trick getting that in the house...its something like 216 lbs...and yea, I'm a stringbean 34year old girl lol. Maybe I can recruit some ppl from work to help with that....That's the biggest cage I could find that didn't exceed 1inch bar spacing (and wasn't over $2000 lol). Does anyone have any thoughts on that cage? Any tips or tricks? I have already ordered replacements for the dowels that come in there. I'm wondering if it will be weird for him to use 20oz crocks. His current cage only has 10oz. He's going to totally freak out with this cage considering it takes a week or two for him to accept new toys. I have to start the toy across the room and slowly move it toward him and then finally in the cage. It's quite the process lol.

Anyhow, it's really great to find a forum like his with such great people and so many personal experiences to build from :)

Yep! Sounds just like a CAG to me. While this is pretty normal for most species of parrots it seems to be even more pronounced in Greys. And you will have to go through this very same process with this new cage. Just take your time and let your Grey move into it gradually and of his own free will and all will be fine.
I know what you mean and how you feel/ felt about that breeder as I have four parrots and I have them because they all underwent abuse of differing types ,but all needed a good safe home and here they are. In fact all of my animals came to me because of their needing to have a good safe home.

Saber, Welcome to the forum.

My houseful of critters are all rescues. Cockatiel Lacy has missing toes on one foot. Phoenix came to me with part of a wing chopped off. Four had been passed around so much that no one remembered their names.

Rambo and Myrtle must be the exception to the rule. All they have to do is see something new and they have to investigate. When Rambo saw my new patterned area rug he had to taste every color to see if they were different.

Welcome, Saber and friends! I can't help you with the cage as I have no experience with it (I have few cages because most of my birds live cage-free).
