Leroy Jenkins and Me <3

Postby LeroyJenkins » Tue Mar 31, 2015 12:42 pm

Hi folks! Yvette here and our new baby Leroy Jenkins Crowbone. Leroy is a Goffin Cockatoo and we recently adopted him from a vet in our area who rescued him from a lousy situation. We are large bradybunch family... 2 adults and 5 kids and tons of love and Leroy is the perfect addition to our flock.

He's playful and loving and super chatty. He adores the kids and is great with us. We had him sexed last week, so we technically don't know if its a he or she... but we don't really care either way. I have been haunting this forum since we got him trying to get a good handle on every aspect of ownership and it has been a wealth of knowledge! Thanks for that.

I registered because we are having a minor problem, but I'll address that in the right area. Until then... heres a few snippets of our handsome baby.

Nice bird and thanks for adopting. What is the thing with Haley? It appears to me that he keeps saying that his name is Sammy and if so I would recommend that you let him keep his name as he identifies with it.

Welcome to the forum! Thank you so much for adopting instead of buying a baby! We need more people like you! And what a delightful bird! But, please, be very careful because their beaks are so large and so strong that even when they don't want to hurt, they do - and children are not what you would call good judges of birds body language and tend to over-excite them without meaning to.

Haley is our youngest daughter and we sort of sing song her name when we call her upstairs, so hes picked up on it really quick. Sammy is not going to happen. Its my ex-sister-in-laws name and its really a negative thing with my family. He says Leroy now and rarely says Sammy anymore.... if he was older than a year, It may be an issue... but its been a pretty quick adjustment already a month later.

Thanks for the welcome :) Leroy is super smart and seems to be super well adjusted to the kids. He "tests" pressure but never bites down... he seems to be more gentle with the little ones too. He hangs out with everyone. We are working hard to keep it that way. The kids take turns and they know the rules on crowding, jumping and fast movements. I'm sure one day we will have some sort of an issue, but there hasn't been one yet. Knock on wood!

I had no idea about your family aversion to the name, I was only thinking of the bird. To be sure, I meant no disrespect.

Welcome to the forum. You can add a name to the existing name and he/she will claim it as a nick name. You really lucked up to get a rescue so well balanced.

My daughter, Rachel, did this to my dog Jasmine (aka Jazz). She started calling her Jazzie Boo Boo. She now responds to Jasmine, Jazz, Jazzi and Boo Boo.

Myrtle is so much like Rachel when she was growing up that I sometimes get the names backwards. Rachel started calling her Sister and she responds.
