New Parakeet Help? pls help :(?

Postby kaygee » Sun Apr 05, 2015 7:38 pm

I just saved a parakeet (got hit by a car, took it to the vet a few days ago, now hes at my home). He has been eating and drinking fine but he puffs up a lot. He had a mirror in his cage but seemed to be becoming obsessive almost (researched that happens, but it had only been one full day so idk) so i took it out. The vet said he knows step up and such but he hasnt really with me so im just giving him space. I know hes probably just getting used to his new space and all (especially after gettin hit by a car) I just want reassurence or the answer. Thank you so much.

Welcome to the forum and thank you for taking him in.
Hit by a car?

You have it right that he needs space. He has no idea what is going on, who you are or where he is. You seem to have a feel for him so just keep it up. Fluffing could mean he is scared or cold. After being hit by a car I would believe he is both. Try to keep him warm and with plenty of fresh food and water.

Look in health and nutrition for food tips.

I really don't think I have ever heard of a Budgie in a car accident.

I don't like mirrors in my birds cages, so I am glad that you removed it.
I also want to say thank you for helping this bird and giving him a home. Most people think that this bird eats only seeds, but in order to remain healthy this bird should also get whole grains and fresh vegetables, leafy greens and fruit on a daily basis.
If we can be of further help please let us know.

Yes, thank you so much for helping this little bird. Most people would have just walked away or, if they had taken him, they wouldn't have taken him to a vet but if he is fluffed up during the day, there is something wrong with him. Didn't the vet give you anything for inflammation and pain -like metacam? Because pain is the most likely explanation for his doing this unless the temperature in your house is very low. Keep him in a quiet place (not in the middle of a human traffic), put his cage up high (at your eye level when you are standing up -and NOT in the kitchen, please), keep him warm -people use lamps but I hate them (can hurt their eyes and you cannot use them at night), I use a heating pad at the bottom of their cage (you can cover it with newspaper to avoid poop on it), a thermometer inside the cage (it needs to be at 85-90 degrees) and I use a towel to cover the top and three sides of the cage, leaving only the front open for light.

As to food, they like leafy greens (all kinds but also raw broccoli) and some veggies like fresh corn, diced carrots, baby peas, they are not big on fruits except for pomegranate seeds so don't worry if he doesn't eat any. Cooked whole grains are also good for them.
