Volunteering at a rescue is a great idea. Not only will you have hands on learning experience but your baby could be sitting there waiting for you. Each one of these feathered kids have individual personalities. I have a flock of cockatiels. Each one knows it's name including the little rescues that came without names. Each one has it's own personality. Maggie was a breeder bird. Her mate died and though I have had her for a while she will not take a mate. Tommy's mate left him for Shadow. It was hard on him but he bonded closer to me for comfort. Jackie's mate Max somehow got out of the house. Now that she is alone she is hanging out with her 2 year old sons Tweet and Retweet.
You just never know when a bird in a rescue is going to think you are really special and decide he needs you for his human.

Unless a pair of birds is already bonded they may not be able to share a cage. If you get a large flight cage, put a bird in it full time, and then try to add a second bird later, the first bird may be territorial: "MY cage. Get OUT!".

Budgies, Cockatiels, and some of the other little birds are more flock oriented than territorial, and this warning may not apply to them. A small flock will be quieter than one large bird, but the chittering noise can be nearly constant.

Good luck!

Yes, Harp is right and that's why I suggested getting two young ones together.

It would be nice if he found 2 adult rescues who have bonded when he volunteers.
