Oh, yes, indeed! You should see my budgies pacing and pacing at the bottom of the cage, anxiously waiting for their plate of gloop in the morning and going to town on it as soon as I put it down, they love it!

Would the same recipe work for them as well? Are there any of the grains, etc. that they cannot have? Sadly, mine were always on a seed diet with fresh veggies. That's what the breeder told us was good for them :-(.

The only difference in the gloop that I feed my parrotlet and budgies from what I feed my larger birds is that prior to serving it I chop the vegetables up a bit smaller for them.

Great. I will make for them as well. One other question. Can the birds have split peas? Any issue with those?

Ok, I went shopping. I'm going to attempt up add a photo of what I bought here and hope that it appears. If not, I'm going to list what I purchased and maybe you guys can let me know if all of these work.

Image

I purchased a box of 5 grain mix. It has spelt, barley, rice, wheat berries & oats.
I also purchased small amounts of (top row if photo shows) - hard wheat kernels, navy beans, Aztec blend which includes colusari red rice, long grain brown rice, split peas, amaranth.
Bottom row - rye flakes, purple prairie barley, kasha buckwheat, wild rice.

I also have lentils and quinoa at home along with acorn squash, sweet potato, kale.

Any tips/hints on putting some of this together...what should I start with? Can I freeze these once cooked?

Looks great, Sherry! I don't buy the dry beans, I buy the canned ones because they take so much longer to cook than any of the other stuff and need to be done with high heat while the other stuff can be done with low temperature. I like to combine items that require the same time of cooking so I cook the wheat with the kamut, the barley with the oats, and the lentils with the rices (I make very large batches so combining them makes less work). Make sure they are all cooked al dente except for the beans (the lentils will cook soft in the same amount of time it takes for the rices to cook al dente).

The veggies are great but add some more like sweet corn, peas, carrots, chopped broccoli, maybe some chopped green beans, etc. I use the frozen ones with the exception of the sweet potatoes which I cook in the Potato Express bag and the hominy which I get from a can.
