Hello from North Texas

Postby modifieddesign » Thu May 28, 2015 3:10 pm

My name is Rickey and tomorrow I am picking up a Meyers Parrot that was hand fed and recently weaned by Birdie Boulevard. Very excited.

I will mostly be a quiet observer. Just here to learn. I don't have the experience for any input.

Welcome to the forum.
Your input will be keeping us posted on how you are doing. When a breeder says the bird is weaned he is just wanting to sell it fast. They are never truly weaned when you get them. So you have to get some of the formula and learn how to feed them. You don't stop until they are eating enough on their own so that they don't want hand fed.
A human toddler who can feed himself gets tired before he is full. He needs spoon fed too.

I know that you were told that the bird is weaned, but many weaned birds regress when they are stressed by the move to a new environment, so make sure that you get some of the weaning formula as well as instructions on how to use it. Also get a list of the foods that the bird has started eating or was weaned to. Please understand that this bird can only have a healthy diet when it is eating whole grains as well as a variety of vegetables and fruits and that you will have to teach it not only that these things are food but that it needs to eat them.

Good to know. Hopefully that's not the case. She said its fully feathered and has been eating Roudybush pellets plus fruits/veggies.

Welcome to the forum! Do you always believe what a person wanting to sell you something says about the product? I doubt it. I mean, you would not believe a car salesman so why believe a bird salesperson? They both want to sell you something and they are always going to tell you their product is fabulous and completely, 100% worry free. Not saying this would jeopardize the sale so it would have to mean shooting themselves in the foot, right? Please have formula as well as ingredients for soft foods (served fresh twice a day). When it comes to babies, it pays to be prepared.

Well good news. I picked her up this morning and she is eating pellets and chewing on an apple in the crate (the breeder put the food in with her) as I type this. We still haven't made it home yet but she doesn't seem to be regressing.

I know, and that is not quite the way that it works. There is a possibility that the bird will not regress, but it is too soon to know yet. I hope that she doesn't, but if one is to err it is best to err on the side of caution so that you can be prepared.

I hope that is the case, my dear, but, like Wolf says, the emotion set-back of rehoming is not immediate so, please, get yourself a digital scale to make sure the bird is not losing weight and do get ingredients for soft food because, even if it doesn't regress, she still needs special food until she is an adult.

I have a digital scale with perch. If she needs soft food it's a 5 minute drive to get it.

So far she eats Roudybush constantly, loves sunflower seeds as a reward, and drinks well on her own.

Today I taught her to step up using seeds as a reward. She is doing very well. Thanks for the concern.
