Greetings from a fellow bird lover!

Postby JessiMuse » Wed Jun 10, 2015 12:31 am

Hello everyone! My name is Jessi Muse, but you may all call me Jessi.

Currently, I don't own any birds right now, but my father owns a white capped Pionus parrot who's kind of like the family pet (he would be if he were more friendly). I love that beautiful bird, even if he kinda scares me a bit (I've been working on that though). I joined the site to hopefully get tips on how to bond with our Pionus, and gain his trust, as well as fix the behavior problems, and eliminate his fear of being outside of the cage.

I've also had a long history with birds, as my mother used to raise finches and cockatiels as well as any other abandoned feathered babies our neighbors brought to us (mainly quail, occasionally doves). One of my personal favorite species is the cockatiel. :greycockatiel:

I also plan on getting a bird of my own in about a month, and so I may be around to ask tips for that bird when the day comes (if it happens to be a parrot, that is. My mother isn't very enthusiastic about getting another parrot).

I do have knowledge on raising birds, as I've helped my mother with it, quite a few times so if anyone ever have questions about hand-feeding baby birds, I'd be happy to share what I've learned over the years of learning from my mother. :)

I look forward to being a member. (By the way, I love these bird emotes. Whoever designed them did a good job).

I would really prefer more information about this bird prior to making many comments or suggestions concerning it. I would also like to take this time to welcome you to the forum.
It would help a lot to know the birds age and its diet as well as how long it has been a member of your family. I understand that with the bird being somewhat cage bound that it probably does not have much of a schedule but knowing what an average day is like for this bird would also help. Include things such as when the bird gets up in the morning and goes to bed for the night, when are its meal times and what does it receive to eat at these times. Due to the particular nature of this species are there other birds in the household at this time? I would also prefer to have something other than this bird or the bird to call it. The more information that you can share in detail about this bird, the more accurate our responses will be.
Except for the occasional male of this species becoming overly protective of its human this species is not known to be much of a biter. It is also not known for liking a lot of touching although it enjoys quietly hanging out with its human and human flock mates. It is generally a very laid back and docile bird.

I plan on making a post including all that information (his name is Dudley, ny the way). I would love to bring him out of the cage. He used to be so sweet, according to my parents (they got him before I was born), but then he just "turned mean", as my parents say (again, it occurred before I was born). He also used to love being pet (he was social, even for his species). Even now, he lets people pet him, ever since he "turned mean", he's had a tendency to bite people while they're letting them. You'll see the details when I've made the post.

It also seems I've worded something incorrectly. He's not afraid to get out of his cage and fly away from it, but once he does, he's afraid of everything around him. He'll just stand in one spot for he most part and won't accept any treats, making it impossible for us to teach him to step up, to eventually put him back in his cage (he also hates being grabbed). I'll include more specific details in the post I'll make.

But thanks for welcoming me. :) I hope to get the advice I need for Dudley (I'd call him my baby, but he's older than me), and possibly the future bird I may get, again if it's a parrot.

Welcome to the forum.
My method: bird proof your bedroom. Open his cage door and let him come out on his own. If he wants to stay perched in one place let him. Even if he stays perched in one place for hours he has still been given the freedom of out of cage. Watch TV, read a book or anything quiet. If you read a book read out loud. Don't make him the center of attention. Don't try to touch him. When he has accepted that you are safe he will start trying to communicate with you even if it is quiet noises. When he is ready he will come closer to you.
I am an old lady with a bad memory so I don't know how long it took for Myrtle to accept me as her Mom. The info is in the thread Rambo & Myrtle. I do know that this year is the first time she has put down her head for me to scratch it. I rescued her at a year old and have had her four years.
I don't believe any bird is mean. There is a reason for the aggression. Just like a kid I give them the benefit of the dout (? I never could spell). Fear is the biggest reason for aggression. The second thing could be that something is wrong physically. It could also be that you replaced him with getting attention. Who knows and he won't tell you.
If you are afraid of him just wear protective clothing. Treat him as if he is your sweet little buddy.
These guys are far from dumb. He will pick up on how you feel about him.
