glad to find this forum

hello, i have a Senagel for 2 years.. I got him from a breeder in northern Va and after a very long first year and a half, i finally have a bird i can live with for a long time. He was unlike any other senegal i have ever read about. he was wonderful till about 5 months old and he turned into the devil. he would bite the crap out of us. noisy, mean and bossy. (i am sure i had something to do with it) I came to the point that i was ready to re-home him. Glad i didn't but i really had a difficult time. i did a lot of searching for help. I finally contacted a parrot rescue near me and got some great advise.

one thing i discovered was how important sleep was. he now goes to bed much earlier. He was also much worse during certain seasons (discovered this when i went back to see other forums and checked the dates of my outreach for help) moulting was a very bad time, and mating season used to throw him over the edge.

anyway..long story short, he is much better.. really love the guy! my husband loves him too. and tattoo loves both of us. I could never give him up now.

I have other questions that I will ask later in this forum.

Hello and welcome.

I can't imagine what it was like to go through that with your Senegal. Jessie, our Senegal has always been a very good bird. I've always been able to handle him without a problem.

Welcome! I'm really glad you made the decision to not re-home him. Sometimes they take more patience, dedication, and time than we original anticipate. But once you put the work in and get past the bad behavior it's more than worth it ;)

I can understand the frustration. My Amazon hasn't even reached sexual maturity yet (at least he hasn't started to display any hormonal or breeding behaviors) and he decided he hated my husband. My husband already wasn't a fan of birds so it was really trying when out of nowhere my amazon would fly at my husband to attack him repeatedly throughout the day. Unfortunately we had to give him a mild clip to discourage him from flying while we work on improving his relationship with my husband. It's taken a long time and a lot of baby steps but my husband can now pick him up out of his cage and off of his play stand and Mojo will even accept treats from him now!

It's still going to be a long road ahead of us but the little bit of progress we're seeing is amazing. And my husband really feels a lot differently towards Mojo now that he sees what a little time and patience can do!

Keep up the great work with your Sennie!

Kathleen is writing an article about how she over-came "spousal aggression" with Kili and there will be a video included. It's just a lot of work to compile everything so it's taking a while. So stay tuned.
