Hello from me and Seri!

Postby Jade » Tue Jun 30, 2015 9:48 am

This is the first time i've ever been a part of a blog, so hopefully I figure out where to post my questions :)
But introductions: I've owned several budgerigars when I was younger, had a breeding pair of ring necked doves, and kept one of the semi hand raised offspring, and used to own a very territorial love bird. The love bird was a rescue when she was older, and I was still young and didn't really do any training with her unfortunately. I've had the hand raised dove the past 10 years, with no other birds, and when she passed I decided I wanted to try the next step up.
Seri is my first official small parrot. I adopted her at 3-4 months of age from a pet store. I visited her every weekend while she was being hand raised and spent a few hours with her each time. The day I went to pick her up, she acted like a totally different bird. She was terrified of me, wouldn't perch up like before and just kept trying to get away. Once we got home, I let her chill for a few days before trying to reintroduce. Its been more of an uphill battle than I thought it would be, but now she is fully bonded, presents her head for scratches, perches up, and is in general very sweet. To me and only me. She hates my husband, and we've tried everything we can think of to win her over, from food, to spending time near him with out interaction. Our next step is I want to try hands off target tricks with him and her.

So much for what I read about Meyers being easy going and not bonding as often. She doesn't like to fit the norm I guess. :)

I am afraid I don't understand what you mean by not bonding as often.

I think she means 'over bonding' but Meyer's, as all companion parrots, are, usually, one person birds so no surprise here.

Now, she is still a baby and you are her parent so her behavior is actually perfectly normal. She will change as she goes through puberty and might very well switch her allegiance to your husband as her human so I would recommend you don't regard the situation as permanent because it might not be even if you don't do anything to change it - and short of you disappearing from her life, there is nothing you or your husband can do unless your husband is not really interacting with her in any way.

You say you have tried 'everything you can think of', can you, please, tell us exactly what this everything was and for how long?
