Introduction - Hello from Kitchener, ON

Postby GRANDMA » Thu Jul 02, 2015 3:11 pm

Hello fellow parrot owners! I have just purchased a Senegal parrot who is 4 mths old, his name is Zazu. He came prenamed and seemed to know it already that i decided not to make a change to it. I need some help to know how much food a day he should be given. I give him fruit in the mornings with his regular bird food. But again I'm not sure how much he should be given. It has consisted of blueberries, raspberry, shredded carrot (raw). I did purchase some premade cooked food from the store where he was purchased. That is made from pasta, seeds, beans, peas, carrots and then frozen in small cups about the size of an ice cube tray. I cut one in half and just let it thaw and then gave to him at room temperature but he wouldn't eat any of it....I have noticed just today that his poop was a little watery but otherwise normal looking. He is very happy, active and wants to interact with me, i just want to keep him happy and healthy. Any advise you can provide would be greatly appreciated. thank you!! :senegal:

As a temporary answer to your question I would start by feeding him the precooked food in the mornings along with a little fresh raw fruit, fresh raw vegetable and a fresh raw leafy green. Then if he runs low on the precooked food you can give him more. Then I would feed the seed mix for dinner around 5:30 or 6 pm. I would give him about 2 tablespoons of the seed mix and remove any excess when he goes to sleep at dark.
The bird should always have food and water from the time he wakes up until he goes to bed at night.
It would help if you provided the exact name of each of the foods that you are giving him so we can look them up. We can then help you to adjust his diet as needed a lot easier. We would be able to use the ingredient list and nutritional information to help you give him the best diet for him.

Welcome, grandma and Zazu! Wolf is correct, please give us the name of the food so we can tell you whether it's good or not (you simply can NOT trust the pet food industry!). And he is also right in that he should have soft food available to him all day long (but that doesn't mean seeds or any other source of high protein). The only thing I disagree with is dinner time, I am feeding mine dinner at 7:15 right now because days are still very long.

I have to adjust the time if I use the clock to say when to feed as I live up in a holler in which the sun rises over a ridge of the mountain in the east and sets behind another ridge in the west. There is only about a half of a mile between the two ridge tops, so they definitely affect the times of dawn and dusk here where I live. Sorry about that, I don't often use the clock as a reference when speaking of my birds.

I hear you. I also don't really go by the clock because, for example, on a dark and gray day, they get their breakfast later and their dinner early as I go by the amount of natural light there is. Last night, they got their dinner at 6:30 pm because there was a storm coming and it had gotten real dark out...
