hi I am new to this forum

Postby jentwon » Wed Mar 24, 2010 2:41 am

hi everyone, i love birds and i have a big heart for all animals-- i am on this forum because i need help understanding my Senegal Parrot

i Bought the bird from a lady in my state of Colorado. In the year 2000 my conure died and I told myself i could never get another bird again--

however when i saw the picture of the Senegal i felt it needed me for some odd reason...
so i drove 45 minutes to this ladies house and she directed me towards the kitchen, in a very small cage with no toys, dirty green water, and a completely disgusting environment was this beautiful bird.

the lady was rehoming the bird due to the fact she had 6 kids dogs cats and farm animals and a 7th baby on the way=== immediately i knew this bird had been neglected and most likely abused in some way by her six little kids------

i knew i had to take this bird out of this situation- I paid her 130.00 dollars got in the car drove to the nearest store and bought him a new cage, new food, toys, i mean he is spoiled :)

he has been with me almost 2 weeks--- and at this time he is still very nervous and anxious, and i cannot pet him at all, he is very fearful

well thats my story-

Welcome! Sounds like your new parrot is extremely lucky that you came along. This is a case where I agree with the decision to rehome a parrot, it will get much better care in the hands of someone else.

I don't have any experience rehoming parrots or acquiring a parrot that is fearful but I do know that whether the bird was actually mistreated or not it has had its entire world turned upside down by coming to live with you. It will take a lot of time and patience on your behalf to teach the bird that you're safe and that it can trust you. How much do you know about the bird? Was it handled regularily? Was it hand tame in its previous home or was it always left in its cage? Has he been interacting with any of the toys that you've bought for him? Unfortunately for birds that have grown up without toys they really don't know what they're about and you may have to teach him how to play. They can also be quite fearful of toys because they don't know what they're about. Feel free to post about any problems that you're having or any questions that you may have :) .

Here is a great article to get you started if you haven't read it already How to teach parrot to step up and come out of cage.

Thanks for giving this bird a new life. Good luck and I hope you two will have a great life together  .

Welcome to the board jentwon and congratulations on your new addition :) Thank god he's in a better place and will hopefully learn to trust you in time.

I'm fairly new to the board as well and I have a Senegal and a Red-Bellied at home.

When I got my Senegal Jessie, he was a hand-raised, hand-fed 3-month old. I actually bought him when he was 2-months old, but he stayed at the store until he was weaned and maintaining his weight. He was already a very well socialized bird and I visited him almost every day at the store until I was able to bring him home. So I'm not the best person to give suggestions on how you can get him to trust you. I would start simple just by letting him get used to you without expecting anything from him right away. Even if that just means sitting in the same room with him in his cage while you're watching TV. As he gets used to you being around him, you may want to start by seeing if he will accept treats from you while he's in his cage. I'm sure with lots of love he'll come around. Good luck and be sure to keep us up to date with his progress.

As far as Senegal's go, my little guy is a hoot. He is a very happy go lucky bird that loves to be goofy. His absolute favorite thing to do is hang upside down off his perches and toys and swing back and forth. He also loves his attention, scratches, cuddles and kisses. From what I've read about Senegals, he's pretty typical. Hopefully with time and love you're little guy can live a carefree life as well.
