New owner of a white ringneck

Postby Tamalam » Fri Sep 04, 2015 1:36 pm

Hello everyone!
I'm new to this forum and also a new owner of a white ringneck. I have had a green Indian ringneck in the past, a sun conure and a cockatiel. It has been a few years since I've had a bird with my last one being the sun conure I rescued from the scorching heat of Abu Dhabi. She was so lovely and I was sad that she escaped one day when my husband came home from work when I was out of the country. So I decided today to get a new bird. This is a white ringneck from Holland...so I was told. I really know nothing about this type of bird and I would love to learn lots! The only bird I ever had that was really friendly was my cockatiel, and I would love to be able to get this new one to sit on my hand and let me touch it and scratch its neck and kiss and cuddle and all those lovely things they let you do when they are not afraid of you. I've had her about an hour now, and she is settling in to her new surroundings so far well. I tried to see if she would let me touch her (going to go with her for now) and she is still rather skittish. She has clipped wings so that should make it a bit easier at least to catch her if she tries to escaped into the living room hahaha. I would appreciate any tips I can get and look forward to trying to find old posts to read up on to learn as much as I can. Can't wait to get started!

The only difference between a white and a green ringneck is their color. It is still the same species and the white is just a color mutation that someone has bred for. I needs the exact same diet and care as the green one which is its normal color. Will be glad to help if you have any specific questions.

Welcome to the forum. Yes, it's as Wolf stated, white ringnecks are the same as green ones only, most likely, not as healthy as they are because you need a defective gene for them to be white and are, almost always, a product of inbreeding. Now, when you say it's from Holland, it's just the way they are called in your part of the woods or a bird that was shipped from Holland? Because, if it is, that's a very long trip for a bird...

Do you know how old it is and whether it was hand-fed or parent-raised? Because that would make a HUGE difference in the final relationship you might achieve with the bird. A word of caution, IRNs are not cuddly birds so all the kisses and hugs you are looking for might never materialize but, with a lot of work and time put into it, you can get a bird that trusts and loves you and allows you to scratch its head.
