Hello from Australia

Postby BennyJJ » Thu Oct 22, 2015 7:54 pm

Hello!

So my son has an approx 3mth old rainbow lorikeet, named BennyJJ = Benny Jnr Jnr.

He is very very loud alot, he is on wet mixture twice a day, lots of water to drink and play in, has toys, loves orange and apple & has a nibble on beans and carrot also, trying today with sunflower kernals and pepitas.

Doesnt like to be handled and bites really hard.

Wanting to find out how we can get the best out of him, train him and have him so we can walk outside with him etc. Any suggestions about anything would be awesome! :-)

Thanks heaps
BennyJJ

Welcome to the forum. I don't know much about lorikeets as I don't have any of them. We do have some members with them and hopefully they will chime in with the answers that you are looking for. It would be very helpful if you could tell us about the birds current schedule, how long you have had him. The more you can say about him the better we can answer you. I will say that they are not seed eaters in their natural state so I am not thinking that seeds are going to be good for the bird, I will have to do some checking to see what their diet should be other than the wet and dry mixes that are made specially for them and it is my understanding that they need both the wet and dry mixes on a daily basis.
I would say with the limited information that I have been given that the major reason for his biting at this time is that he is still new to you and his environment as therefore he does not trust you yet. So it is best that you spend time just talking and singing with him to get him used to you and if you will give him a small amount of treats while you are doing this it will help him to think in terms of good things come from you and help him to learn to trust you.

Their natural diet is fruits, nectar and pollen so no seeds for them. If you want to make his diet something closer to what they eat in the wild, I suggest you get some nice organic, wild flower pollen as well as the commercial wet mix/fruits.

The thing with lories is that, sometimes, they are not hand-fed and, although they are naturally friendly birds (people report even the wild ones been people-friendly once they get used to them), they are also the kind that you need to spend A LOT of time with them because this is a species which is actually more aviary than companion as they are intensely pair-oriented. So, that's the trick: spend lots and lots of lots of time with it, talking, singing, offering treats (maybe pollen crumbles?) and wait for it to get used to you.
