Hi there

Postby Toggsy » Wed Nov 04, 2015 5:54 pm

Thought I'd better introduce myself.
Used to keep and breed various reptiles mainly snakes which I really enjoyed.
Sadly my new partner doesn't like snakes and share my passion so we decided to keep birds as it was a interest that we both could share and enjoy together.
We keep 2 Indian Ringnecks which we've only just acquired so were still taming them down at the moment and I'm amazed at how quickly they are picking up things and settling in.
We also have 2 celestial parrotlet which are stupidly tame and for a little bird they are big in character.
We also have 2 aviarys in the garden which houses canaries, finches, diamond doves, budgies, cockatiels and Chinese painted quails.
This year we successfully bred our first birds, little diamond doves which was interesting to watch the doves develope from what I would describe as a oven ready chicken into a beautifull pied dove.
Our cockatiels were also sitting on eggs for a while but these turned out to be infertile after I investigated why they abandoned the nest.
I hope to learn lots of new things as well as pass on things I've learnt whilst I've been keeping birds they say everyday is a learning day how very true that statement is.
I would like to eventually to own and keep a cockatoo

Welcome to the forum! You obviously don't know this but canaries are not aviary birds. Only social birds do well in aviary situations and canaries are territorial so keeping males with other birds (not only other species but other canaries, including males with females -you can keep females together, though) is terribly stressful to them and it shortens their life considerably.

I didn't welcome you to the forum here earlier as I tried to do that in your post with your parrotlets, but have just read your introduction and would still like to welcome you to the forum. I also have two parrotlets although for all practical purposes mine are just the opposite of yours as to the colors of the male and female. My female is the green one and appears to be a Celestial/ Lucinda hybrid and my male is a turquoise in color. I also have a pair of Budgies, although I usually am really good at doing my research on the birds that I have, I must admit that I have been much too lax in doing this with them so I actually know far less about them than what I should know.
I noticed that you are wanting a Cockatoo, and although I don't have any of them, I have been researching them quite a bit lately as the forum has recently been receiving more questions concerning them. I would definitely urge you to research them thoroughly both the larger ones and the smaller ones before you decide to make the commitment to one of them. And if you decide to make that commitment that you strongly consider looking at adopting one as there are so many of them needing a good home and so few people who are a good match for them. This is just me trying to speak up in their behalf as it is so very hard on them to be in a home that is not a good match or to be rehomed.

Thanks for the welcome wolf and seagoatdeb
I've always wanted a too and yes I do understand what a commitment they are, and like suggested I would be considering a rehome there's always plenty of people advertising on Facebook.
