Hello

Postby angelboa » Tue Dec 22, 2015 2:18 am

Hello I'm Heather I live in Washington near Seattle,
I have owned a goffins cockatoo (Griffin, 17, m) and a patagonian conure (Binx , 20+ f) for about 5 years now. This last Saturday my mom rescued and then gave me a severe macaw (Rigel, 25 unknown sex) and a cockatiel (Inca, unknown age and sex). The birds my mom gave me had no toys and have not been handled at all for the last 2 or 3 years. I was told Rigel had broke his or her beak a few years ago but after seeing the vet Rigel has been rubbing his beak on the cage bars out of boardum. I was told it doeskin appear that the growth plate was affected by the beak rubbing but we will be keeping a close eye on that. I found my way to this site looking for information on the best ways to re-tame Rigel and let her know she is loved and can trust us.

Kudos to your Mom for rescuing the little guys. Kudos to you for taking them.

To me this forum feels like a very close neighborhood with neighbors helping and teaching each other as well as talking about our kids.

Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum. Just going by the names alone Rigel would be a male and Inca would most likely be a female. There are some members that may be able to say for sure about the cockateil's sex if you post a couple of pictures of it.
The main thing is just to take it slow and easy with Rigel and let him make the first moves towards physical contact and in the mean time talk to him with lots of good bird, Rigel type of praise and the offer of a long piece of fruit, perhaps for a treat. Unless there is more to his story where he has some problems that need to be taken into account that is basically all you need to do to get him to see that you can be trusted.
Please feel free to tell us as much about him as you can and ask all the questions that you want and we will do our best to help.
