Hello - from farther north along the Hudson!

Postby KSH » Wed Dec 30, 2015 9:29 pm

Hi, I miss having pet birds and am thinking and researching about what to look for and when, and how best to care for them. I'm finding that much has changed since I had parakeets as a child, and even since I had lovebirds a bit more recently. I had a few years of experience caring for birds ranging from zebra finches to an umbrella cockatoo, and I know I am not prepared to be owned by a 'too!! We do have chickens and guinea fowl outside, and I try to do the best I can for all of my animals and keep learning as much as I can. There is a rescue nearby and I hope to volunteer there, both to further my knowledge and experience and to help the birds.

It amazes me how many birds end up in rescue. I'm not sure why; I guess I just assumed people getting parrots would rarely be people who gave them up. Again, not sure why I'd put parrot owners on such a pedestal since I am very familiar with all of the mammals that are given up, and we have several here ranging from a border collie to a pony!

I find myself coming back over and over to Senegals, so I hope that perhaps through the rescue I can meet one or more as that is a species with which I don't have firsthand experience. Meanwhile I'll keep reading here. Thanks for the opportunity!

Hi & welcome :)
I think allot of people get a parrot and dont expect the work they are, to allot they are just talking trophies, thus which is sad.
Volunteering with birds is great fun, Im certain youll love it :)
Hopefully you will be able to meet a :senegal: shortly and possibly take it home :)

Welcome! I think that there are two main reasons why people give up their birds:
1) It's impossible to keep them healthy and happy when you have a normal lifestyle.
2) They live too long for humans to maintain the same interest in them throughout their lifespans.
