Greetings!

Postby owlyssa » Fri May 06, 2016 11:03 am

Hello, all! My name is Alyssa and I just joined this site while furiously Googling bird names. :P I'm looking forward to using this site and everyone on it as a resource, and am happy that it looks like it's a fairly active site!

:greycockatiel:
So I was born and raised in a very animal-friendly household. We've always had countless pets in our home. I got my first bird, a sweetheart Cinnamon Pearl Cockatiel named Jeter, when I was about 10 years old. She was my companion and I could always count on her to cheer me up. Sadly, she passed away in July of last year. I continue to mourn her loss, and no other pet could ever replace her memory.

:senegal:
As of today, I am the new owner of an inquisitive yet clumsy young Senegal who is currently nameless (in the process of trying to figure that one out--let me know if you have any suggestions!). I'm very excited to introduce another feathered companion in my life, and am hoping that this time around, I'll be able to socialize my birdie more so that s/he doesn't wind up being overly attached to me, like Jeter had been.

I'm looking for friendship and advice on this site, and am looking forward to swapping stories, knowledge and more with you all!

Welcome to the forum Alyssa!

It will be awesome having you here :D
I personally always liked the name Sammy for a senegal, but it is a pretty common name. This webpage has a lot of bird names, although they are not all great, some you may like. http://www.cockatiel.org/fun/birdnames.html
Looking foward to getting to know you and your new little baby!

Thanks for the warm welcome, Chantilly! c: I'm loving this forum already; everyone seems so friendly and knowledgeable, which I definitely plan to take advantage of and (hopefully) contribute to. :D

Thanks for the link! I'll check it out! I had Kona in mind (I'm a coffee lover, and I feel like it's an easily pronounceable name for both birds and humans), but I'm not 100% sure it fits the baby's personality! I've only met them once, but I can already tell they're very curious and slightly clumsy. :P

Again, thanks for welcoming me into the fold (flock?)!

I really can't claim to have a lot of knowledgr about cockatiel. I do know that they are very flock oriented and that if they have another cockatiel to bond with that they will bond more with the other one than to a human, which is actually a good think, in my opinion, although some humans would not agree. I suspect that if they lack another bird to bond with that they would be more like other parrots in their bonding with a human. This is just conjecture on my part as I don't have cockatiels and with all that I have read about them, I almost feel like I have missed out on something.

I do have a Senegal and can attest to the fact that they can become very bonded to their chosen human, to the extant that out of four hours of out of cage time that they mat tend to want to spent upwards of three of those hours on or very near their chosen human. During this time on their human they may become just a bit nippy if they feel that their human is not paying enough attention to them. Although I believe that the term " Velcro bird " was termed to fit the behaviors of the GCC, it can often fit very aptly with a Senegal parrot.

I waited a bit before replying to this thread and unless I have confused you with someone else, I ma thinking that you don't yet have your bird as it is being weaned, so I was wondering when you would actually get your bird and if I have confused you with someone else I would like to ask both how old your bird is and how long you have had it. I also wanted to welcome you to the forum.

Welcome to the forum! I am afraid that I am not any good at coming up with names. I name all of mine with people's names, usually, but Kona is a good name for a parrot: short and easy to say. Please tell us about him (is it a him?), how old he is, how long you've had him, etc.

Thanks for the welcome, Wolf! :) So you are correct--I believe I am the person you were thinking of. I met, fell in love with, and purchased Kona (avatar picture) this past Thursday. They are currently in the process of being weaned and if all goes according to plan, I will be taking my baby home in a month's time. I do not know my Senegal's exact age; I'm hoping I'll get a chance to ask the owner when I go to visit again this Tuesday.

I can definitely see the "Velcro effect" in Kona already! I don't know if you can offer any firsthand experience/advice with this, but I have noticed that Kona is very nibble-happy. Their bites aren't all that painful (except when she got a hold of my dad's ear!), but I was wondering if it was normal for Senegals to be like this. Additionally, I'm looking into how to correct this sort of behavior before it can turn into problem biting; if you have any advice, I'd be happy to hear it! :hatched:
