Hello, would love info on a Mustache Parakeet

Postby ebrooks2471 » Wed May 18, 2016 12:08 pm

Hi everyone. I have a new Mustache Parakeet. She is my third and final bird and is very different than my Green Cheek Conure. I really don't know a lot about them, but have read a lot of sites. I would like to talk with someone who owns a Mustache Parakeet or has any information on them.

Arabella is 6 months old and very sweet. I am surprised at how completely different she is from my Green Cheek. I love her but I am not sure how to train and make her want to be loved on. She loves my shoulder but is very clumsy. She makes this crying noise when I talk to her, but is very loud and different when others talk to her. She absolutely loves her perch and hates her large cage.

Can anyone give me any advice at all? It would be greatly appreciated! :irn:

I can't be sure without more information, but it sounds as if your new Moustached parakeet is begging for food. It is possible that she/he was weaned too fast or incorrectly., it is also possible that it is not getting adequate nutrition from the adult foods, for that reason I would thy giving a little soft food to this bird.

There is a chance as well that it is begging for more attention at it is new and afraid, why doing this just with you? Could be that the bird wants to bond with you or that you are the one providing the most food and attention.

I believe Wolf is right about the begging.
Rambo is 31 and still begs. It starts the guessing game for what he wants.
Other than the noise he makes what else does he do? Does he lower his head? Does he slightly flutter his wings (it looks more like vibration)?

If it were mine: I would assume it is begging and find out why. He is young and totally dependent on you. When a toddler learns to feed himself it is an effort to get enough before getting tired and you have to help feed him. I would feed him until he does not want it anymore. Just like a baby I would keep him near me in the room that I am most active.

Even at 31, Rambo is still my baby. He is equivalent to a 5 year old and still needs a lot of attention.

Welcome to the forum. Why don't you post a video of her making the 'crying' sound so we can better determine if she is begging or not? As far as I know, baby moustaches (never had any, I am going by videos and other people's accounts) make a sound like Beep beep in their feeding response but I don't know what kind of sound they would make at 6 months if they were begging for food...

As to the difference between a moustached and a GCC, yes, they are very different. GCCs are Velcro birds while moustaches, like all other psittaculas, tend to end up been quite aloof to people.

I guess Mango is a exception to that then lol he only wants to be around humans and never hangs out with the other birds.

Well, making generalizations when one talks about parrots is a tricky thing because they have such marked individual personalities, but there are common characteristics in species that one can use as guidelines. And, when it comes to GCCs, they tend to be eminently cuddly while psittaculas are not. But that doesn't mean they like to be by themselves... of course they would much rather be with people than alone! But one also has to take into consideration the length of time a bird has been with us (two years been, in my personal opinion, the minimum, for a bird to feel comfortable in his surroundings) and the kind of bird it lives with because it's not the same having one of a similar species than having completely different ones like you have (I never had a tiel bond with anything else but another tiel or a gray bond with any other bird, only humans).

I think that my definition of Velcro bird is different from yours, Brandon.
