New to forum, new Jardine's on the way!

Postby kori » Wed Jul 06, 2016 7:59 am

Hello All!

I am currently a proud bird mom to two Budgies (they are actually my kids' birds, but you know...) and and two Princess of Wales Parrots. My Princesses in particular are just completely delightful, sweet fun birds and I could watch them all day. They were hand-fed and enjoy coming out to explore, sitting on my shoulder, and nibbling my ear, but they are still mostly aviary birds, rather than true companion parrots.

After doing a huge amount of research (including hours and hours of reading through this forum), I have decided on a Greater Jardine's Parrot for my first companion bird. My new baby is currently being weaned and will come home in a few weeks! I do not have birdie blinders on--I know Jardines can be willful and bitey, the challenges I will face as my baby becomes a juvenille, enters hormonal phases, etc. I know am starting a long-term relationship with this bird, who will most likely live with me longer than my kids, not merely acquiring a "pet." I want to make sure I start off on the right foot, so I am reading pretty much everything I can on parrot behavior, training, etc. Oh and we also have dogs in our home, so I plan to leave my bird flighted for its own safety, even though we will not allow direct bird/dog interactions for the forseeable future.

Anyway, that's my intro. Looking forward to getting to know you folks!

Welcome to the forum, Kori! Do you know what type of jardine are you getting? I used to have a lesser female and she was the sweetest little thing. Her name was Baby Bird but she pronounced it more like BabyBoyd  She went back to her original owner after years and years of living with me -I still miss her "You wanapple?" which was her way of asking for fruit.

Tell us about your princesses and budgies! How old they are, their names, if they are flighted and hand-tame, etc.

Hi! My new baby is a Greater Jardine's. I should get DNA sexing results in the next week or so! I am really, really excited to bring him/her home.

My Princess Parakeets are named Arya and Sansa and they came to us clipped, but are slowly regrowing their flight feathers. They are still juveniles, but we believe we have a male and a female due to differences in feather and beak coloring, but the "male" does not the expected orange eyes yet. They are generally pretty quiet (especially compared to our chatty Budgies) and love foraging. Both are hand-tame, tolerate kids well, and are not at all intimidated by the interest our dogs pay to them. I have them in a large flight cage and it is big and takes up a lot of wall space, but is a pretty great set-up for them. They are truly darling birds and I have no idea why they are not more common in the U.S.!

The Budgies are a male and female and are not hand-tame. They adore each other and chatter all day long, but they are not very interested in people. I know Budgies will "bond" better if solo, but they are so much happier to have each other.

Oh, yes, indeed they are, Kori! You are a parrot keeper after my own heart! I don't care a fig if my birds don't prefer me as long as they are healthy and content!
