Postby namikazekasumi » Thu Jul 07, 2016 7:31 am

Hi Everyone the name's Aamna nd i really love my birds. Currently i have 4 birds with me one Indian Ringneck Parrot, One Blossom Headed Parakeet nd two Budgies. I just rescued the budgies from an old lady the thing is that i went with to a trip with my family nd these cuties got my eye the lady was really treating them badly they looked really weak like the lady was starving them nd she didn't even gave them a bath so i convinced the lady nd brought them from her I've decided to keep them but the thing is i know nothing about budgies. I've given them all kind of seeds one by one but they seemed to eat only the sunflower seeds nd i tried giving them fruits too but they wouldn't touch them I've tried giving them Mangoes, Apples, Apricots, Bananas. they act normal thought and there's no sign of injuries as far as I know plz guyz help me i really wanna save these cuties. Any advice would be appreciated thanks in advance ^^

Welcome to the forum.

Remove the sunflower seeds and use them as treats. Given the choice any kid would go for desert instead of healthy food.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Budgies are ground feeders in their natural habitat and this means that they eat a lot of seeds mostly grass seeds , but don't go trying to feed them grass seeds like you would plant as those have all been treated. Get them a budgie seed mix. Budgies do not eat much in the way of fruit but they will eat some vegetables such as green peas and corn. They also lie leafy greens both shredded fine and as a whole leaf. the one that mine get the most of is either red leaf lettuce or romaine lettuce. You can place the whole leaf soaking wet on the bottom of the cage or hanging from the side of the gage. If you place one on the bottom of the cage and fill it up with water they might even take a bath with it. Vegetables have to be chopped up really fine for them.

My budgies get fresh veggies in the mornings, enough to last until dinner time when they get a budgie seed mix. Also if you look in the diet section you will find some recipies for gloop which my budgies also get in the mornings wit just a sprinkle of seeds on top as they eat it better with just a few seeds on it. All of my birds eat gloop. you could start you new budgies off with partly cooked wild rice and when they are eating that pretty well start adding in the various veggies one at a time starting with either corn or peas and as they start eating them add more variety to the gloop.

I hope this helps.

I just saw where you posted about baths as I was getting ready to post this. Just put a shallow dish like a saucer on the bottom of the cage filled with water and they will bathe when they are ready to. They come from an arid climate and may not bathe as often as birds from a wetter climate.

Welcome to the forum Aamna - and thank you so much for getting the budgies away from the lady!

Some budgies don't like to bathe in water as much as they like to rub their bodies against the wet leaves so, do as Wolf says and put a large and really wet (dripping!) leaf of something like romaine lettuce on the bottom of the cage and I bet you they will eventually 'bathe' in it. And it's the CUTEST thing, too! :D because they squat down and fluffing all their feathers until they look like little balls, they rub themselves on the wet leaves while they flutter their wings -you'll see!

Also, if they had been fed a bad diet, I suggest you get some good quality bird multivitamin/mineral supplement and add it to some kind of soft food -if you don't want to go with gloop, you can always cook couscous, pastina or some whole grain and mix the powder vitamins with it.
