The actual name of the seed mix is not relevant, it's the percentage of his diet that was protein that matters because you can feed the best stuff but if the proportion is wrong, you end up with a bad result. Now, tomatoes are great, my birds love the grape ones and they get the red and the yellow ones but cucumbers are mostly water with very little nutrition. My birds do get them every now and then (mostly because the canaries and the cardinals adore them!) but they also get a different veggie, a different fruit and a different leafy green every day and I always try my best to offer the most nutritious stuff more often as well as a good variety in colors (this is more important than people usually realize) so, for example, today they got organic pears (they all love them!), organic carrots and chicory - yesterday they got pomegranate seeds, yellow zucchini and romaine and tomorrow they are going to get blackberries, yellow tomatoes and green Swiss Chard - see what I mean? And, of course, you have to add all the veggies that are in the gloop which they eat every day: chopped broccoli, corn, peas, carrots, chopped green beans, white hominy, butternut squash, sweet potatoes and chopped artichoke hearts. On some batches, I add a bit of chopped curly blue kale but not in all because of the high content of sorbitol in it and, in others, I add beets.

If I were you, I would not 'listen' to him in terms of his preferences because they are like children in the sense that, if it was up to them, all they would eat would be sunflower seeds, French fries and white bread :D . People often say that, because they are animals, parrots 'know' what to eat but it's simply not true, they eat what they were taught to eat and then, out of this and given a chance, only what they like. They truly have no idea what is good or what is bad for them so always offer a large variety, always eat breakfast with him (his breakfast, not yours!) about one hour after dawn, and keep on insisting on stuff that he doesn't touch because parrots take a looooong time to become familiar enough with a new food item to try it.

Welcome to the forum, I have 2 macaws and if this is his picture his beak looks pretty normal to me. My 2 macaws are the biggest destroyers of all in my flock and are provided with small logs that I've sliced into 2 inch thick rounds and made a huge Mobil out of the wood for them. All bird safe wood and stainless chain of course. They will destroy it quick. And to further promote foraging and chewing I drill holes part way down into wood all the way around the rounds and poke treats in them. They love it. :danicing: To many times vet offices lump up the beak , wing and nail trim in one sentence. My vet one time worked on taking the 2 points off 1 of my mollucans and she was absolutely miserable for weeks eating until she ground her beak back into 2 points on the lower jaw. This was 17 years ago and I know better now that all these cockatoos have the dbl.point. This is an avain specialist he should have known better. Recommend study your particular species they all have different requirments. He is eating fresh produce with no problem and you are soooo luckey that's usually my hardest battle with all the new rescues in my flock. Once again WELCOME anything I can do to help just give a yell , there's a lot of great info here and great people always there when you need them or want to brag! :P Bird Woman

Myrtle came to me at a year old and on an all seed diet. She would not eat whatever until Rambo did. He was a big help in changing her diet. After that she wanted anything any one else was eating.

Well, I have to tell you that Higgins is not really very good... It's not the seeds in it, it's the dried produce in it which is not only dried (bad for parrots that need A LOT of moisture in their food) but also sulfured (real bad) and, the things that need to be organic are not. He would be much better off eating nuts for dinner...

There is indeed a lot of information out there to sort through and to make it even harder ther is a lot of it that is contradictory due to some of it being from times that we knew far less about our birds and their needs and then there is all of the new research that keeps coming out. It is rough to try and sort it all out and even when we think that we are beginning to get it figured out along comes a new study.

I think that Higgins is one of the better feed producers for parrot food, but you still have to read the ingredient and nutritional information on the labels so that you can avoid as many of the inferior ingredients and chemical and other artificial things that are put into the lower end products that they sell. Try to stay with their all organic line of foods and you will fare better.
