That's great news! As Wolf mentioned, flight is essential to a bird's good health -this is because their respiratory system is different from ours, their lungs are very rigid compared to ours and they have several pairs of air sacs (when they breathe in, the air goes into the lungs but then it goes to a pair of air sacs, then to another pair, etc until it goes through all the air sacs before it comes out). The lungs are bellowed by muscles instead of a diaphragm (like mammals have) and, the air coming in from the next breath is what moves the air out of the lungs and into the air sacs. One of the pairs is placed in such a way that the muscles that move the wings up and down are the ones inflating and deflating them so, when you deprive a bird of flight, you are, in fact, depriving its body of the proper means to move the air in and out of these sacs. As an atrophied organ is an organ that is much more prone to disease than one that is been utilized correctly, this causes birds to get unnecessary respiratory infections.

Now, what your bird did is not real flight, it's called gliding. Flight is when they sustain a horizontal and parallel to the ground while flapping their wings but the best exercise is when they do vertical flight or uplift which is the actual take off (going from the ground up). And, yes, depending on the size of the room or rooms (you can open doors and make the distance longer), you should encourage his flying. Having said that, in my opinion and personal experience, amazons tend to be perch potatoes climbing up and down much more than they do any real flying so any flight at all is always an improvement for them.
