The other problem in going only with research is, as Wolf noted on his posting, the huge amount of conflicting information you get on parrots - one person says one thing, the next says the opposite. The truth is that we don't have enough credible sources for information out there so, although research is ABSOLUTELY essential, there is a lot that one can only learn from hands-on.

One thing that always worries me about newbies is whether they would be able to 'pick up' symptoms when they first start and are very subtle... Because, for example, if you don't know what a normal poop for the species you care for looks like and what the range of, say, 'wetness' is, you can miss a lot. And I could go on an on: what constitutes an overgrown beak and what doesn't; how much should the bird sleep during the day; when is the bird 'fluffed up' because he is sick and when he is from normal circumstances; when a 'skinny' chest means the bird is too skinny or due to lack of muscle; what behaviors actually mean (and this is biggie, mind you, because most people misread their birds something terrible!), etc. etc. There are lots and lots of things that, unless you have been exposed to in the past, you would overlook if you were not...
