Hi Lisa,

I'm also very new to conures, I have had them for a week today . . actually it will be a week in about 6 hours :) I have Green Cheeks. If you want to see them live, visit http://bmswebcam.dyndns.org:9001/ and use the login: visitor and leave password blank.

There is another Conure specific forum, but not many people get on it. The information is still very good on their site. I would however recommend you stick to this site here. The link for the Conure Crazy forum is: http://s11.zetaboards.com/Conure_Crazy/index

Look forwards to seeing some pictures of you new bird! and welcome to the forum.

Cheers
Paul

how long have you can jenday conures?

what size cage do you have?
do you use a spectum light?

we are in hamilton NJ, and got our conure at bird paradise, not home yet because he is still being hand fed, it has been 2 weeks this past Sat.
he was moving around more today climbing on us, he will lay up against me. we did for the first time gave him treats today. so i have to start watching to see what he likes.

Hi Lisa,

The following are my cage measurements. Now its worth noting this is the size available to the birds, not the external size or height of the cage. So the cage space available to the birds is 23" x 24" x 37.5"

I only got my conures one week ago and they are both GreenCheeks. Read the section on Taming and Training on this forum, there is a lot of really good information there. If you get your bird into the right habits you wont have any major problems with him.

Cheers
Paul

PS: I look forwards to seeing some pictures of your Conure when you get him home.

EDIT: Lisa, go to ebay and do a search for 260580355820 this will bring up the type of cage I purchased

24x22 is adequate for a Jenday Conure but they are very active birds so a bigger cage would be better. Avian Adventures makes the Chiquita model that is 28 by 22 and is a great size for that size bird and has the correct bar spacing. If you find another larger cage make sure that the bar spacing is correct. That's very important. Bar spacing should be no more than 3/4 inches.

hello:

so you are saying to get the next size which would be 32x23 sense they are so active?
because I was told that the 24x22 is min size and that they should be in bigger, which is the measurements listed above. so I guess we will get the bigger size.

It seems you are really over thinking this. I have a Senegal Parrot in an 18x18x36 cage and she does just fine. She spends time out of the cage and flies which is what really counts. The 24x22 cage sounds more than plenty for a bird that size as long as you are letting it out daily.

Hello:

I watched your tube, i hope I can teach my conure to come when called, I am a dog obedience trainer and i have been reading diffrent things and sites about how people are training their parrots, I find it really amazing and yes you may be right on over thinking the cage, it is just that where we are getting it recommeds the larger cage.

I will also be getting him a playpen, oh by the way how old is your boy? and how long did it take for you to train him to come and leave your hand?

First off, I don't know who you're getting your cage advice from but it definitely sounds like they are trying to upsell you. There is nothing wrong with getting an enormous cage (as long as the bar spacing is still suitable!!! make sure the bar spacing isn't for a larger parrot) if you can afford it. However, typically when people are buying a smaller/cheaper parrot it's because they have a smaller budge (not always but typically I'd say that's the case). Also if you intend on training the bird and keeping it out a lot, not only is the over sized cage unnecessary but even not as good. My parrot is always excited to come out of her cage but she doesn't mind going back in. I think it's a happy medium. She likes her cage but prefers being out.

As for Kili, I've had her closer to two years. I mostly taught her the recall flight stuff in about 1 month. I think it took under a month from the point where she learned she could fly from perch to perch to where I could recall her 60ft across the room. The next 6 months since then we have just been working on perfecting the recall and trying to make it more reliable. Don't forget that she had learned many tricks and how to learn while she was clipped so when I jumped to teaching flight, we were solely focused on flight rather than method of training. Teach target training first. Here's some places I talked about the flight training:
