I feel a little cheated that I did not know he was fatally ill. I did not give him a good bye. I thought he was just chronic like me and doing battle with his illness.
He was so lucky to have you and praised you all the time. I know one of his birds attached herself to you but you have done right by all the others.
I love you for what you have done.

Well, we did know he had lung cancer, Liz, so I guess that we should have expected his death as a possibility... But, in all honesty, I don't know if it was denial or what but even though I knew and kept up with him the diagnosis, the tests, the treatments, how he felt, etc. I always thought he was going to beat it. Especially after the last check up where it showed that the tumor had gotten much smaller.

I did not pick up on it. I thought he had a chronic illness that was giving him pain. His death was a very big shock to me.

He had chronic pain but it was not from cancer, it was from his back that got screwed up when he was in the armed forces.
