Senegal

Postby crousseau » Tue May 04, 2010 9:43 am

Hi! I live in New Brunswick, Canada and my first bird was a Lovebird called Buttercup. She's a sweetheart and has been living with my in-laws since she was about 3yrs old, my daughter had a lot of medical issues and we had so much running around to do for her that my in-laws took her in since she was hand-tamed and needed that human interaction that I couldn't provide for her at the time. She's doing great and is now 8yrs old.

My 2nd bird was a Female Senegal called Sugar, she was 3yrs old when I adopted her from the breeder. The original owners were unable to take care of her and she had started plucking. I learned the hard way that you should always keep your birds wings clipped unless you use a harness and lost her outdoors last summer. I was heartbroken, she was a wonderful bird!

At the same time I also owned 2 canaries, what joy these little birds can bring to a home. The male passed away from old age and I found a new home for the female with a breeder while I wait for her to have babies. Canaries are wonderful! The females don't sing much but the males breath life into any home with their sweet little songs.

I now have a Female Senegal again, Maggie. I bought her from the breeder last summer, she's 3yrs old. She mimics many sounds but doesn't speak any words, not when we're around anyway LOL. I've been to many ECAA meetings and met a few people with Senegals and hope to meet more in the future. Someone also told me about "Kili" on YouTube. Boy I wish I had lots of time on my hands to teach Maggie all that Kili can do :)

Welcome! Sorry about your previous losses.

We used to have a canary when I was growing up. It was a beautiful yellow male we got from my aunt who bred them. He was the most beautiful singer! Except when you wanted to have a nap in the afternoon! It's a myth that putting a sheet over the cage makes them quit singing!

Welcome to the board! Maggie is a beautiful Senegal :)

You've come to the right place if you're looking to talk with other Senegal owners. I have a 4-year old Senegal named Jessie and a 5-year old Red Belly (in the same Poi family) named Lucy. Both birds mean the world to me, but Jessie is my little buddy.

Thank you for the comments, what I find most difficult it that she's very attached to me and wants my attention ALL the time. My husband and daughter are reluctant to spend time with her because she bites them. They're not patient enough to let her get used to them. And she doesn't seem to know how to keep herself entertained when I'm not there so she gets bored.

Surprisingly she's doesn't squawk as much the past two weeks, she's actually quite pleasant. For a good while she was constently screaming out if she knew I was in the house. I've tried all the "tricks" so that I don't encourage the behavior. Next I'm going to try clicker training to try to motivate the good behavior.

Has anyone had issues with unusually loud birds and what if anything were you able to do to change it?
