Here comes Bella_Blue

Postby bella_blue » Thu Jun 03, 2010 1:57 pm

Hi everyone I am quite excited to introduce our new IRN. new baby she (that's what the breeder told me) is 7 weeks old. We are hand feeding with a small syringe. We have been looking all over for more and more information on our birds (my son and family have one also 6 weeks old) and we are in need of a lil guidance. First if someone could tell me, I was under the impression we have parrots, other people say it is a parakeet, can someone tell me for sure. Second question, at this tender age, can baby fruit be introduced yet? smashed banana's baby food squash that type of food? When can those sharp talons have the tips removed?
I do thank you in advance for all your guidance and we love reading the site.

Congrats on your new IRN baby.

I can't comment on the handfeeding, because I've done it myself.

However I did find the following description regarding IRN's : The Rose-Ringed Parakeet or Indian Ringneck is classified as a smaller parrot known as the parakeet. These birds have a hooked beak, a long tail, and are moderate in size compared to most conures. These parrots are about 16 inches in length and they have a stealthy appearance that sets them apart from most exotic birds.

So IRN's are considered parrots and are just part of the Parakeet family of birds.

Hi,

At this point you can and should introduce new foods to the baby. You can try spoon feeding baby fruits and veggies and oatmeal but also put pellets, nuts, seeds, whole grain cheerios and fresh foods in a bowl and have that stuff (except the fresh) available at all times. Also, some sprigs of millet can be left with the baby. Continue to handfeed formula too of course! The baby will start nibbling on stuff soon and you want as many different healthy foods introduced as possible.

You can also go ahead and file the points off of the nails if you are very careful. You might want to use a nail file to just barely file them at this point rather than trying to clip them.

Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions!

Sorry to hear about Bella.

I suspect that the breeder knew that they should not have let you take a bird home that wasn't fully weaned, eating on its own and maintaining weight.

Does anyone else sense something odd about this? Inexperienced person buys 2 unweaned Indian Ringnecks. One dies. I smell something that lurks under bridges....

I would never suggest that anyone buy an unweaned parrot baby.

A breeder that is willing to sell unweaned babies to an inexperienced parrot owner shouldn't be breeding parrots.

Sadly, I think this is an honest post and should serve as an example for people considering buying an unweaned baby. Munchie has posted here before about his baby IRN.

I'm very sorry for the loss of Bella Blue.
