Hello!

Postby Rue » Fri Jun 11, 2010 3:37 pm

Hi everyone!

I'm from the Canadian prairies. I've had cockatiels for over 24 years now. We currently have two. Once is an ex-aviary hen, the other is a hand-raised hen (that technically belongs to my 15-year old son, but guess who looks after her?)

Five years ago I decided I wanted to experience a larger parrot...one thing led to another. First we got a baby Pionus (he's 5 now). Then we took in an older Amazon (she's at least 15 now, to the best of our knowledge), and the most recent addition (almost 3 years since we got her) is a plucked red-tailed African Grey (CAG). She's also 5 years old.

My 18-year old daughter also has 2 budgies. They live in her room with her, so while I look after them when she's away, I don't have very much to do with them.

Looking forward to sharing bird information and news!

Welcome! Which province are you in? I'm from good ol' Manitoba.

What happened with your Amazon and Grey that made them need to be re-homed?

We'd love to see some pictures of your flock!

Thanks for the welcome guys.

We do like our parrots...it gives us a touch of the tropics during our 9 months of winter.

We're in Saskatchewan. Hubby and I were both born and raised in Winnipeg though!

The Amazon is from Ontario. I don't know her entire story, but she ended up as a breeder...but she doesn't want to be a breeder...she wants to be a pet. So the breeder I bought her from (and I think he took her in on trade) was wise enough not to force her into a situation she would be unhappy in. Her favourite place in the world is on my shoulder.

The Grey was local. She belonged to an older couple. The husband had a heart attack and they weren't up to looking after the bird. They gave her to their daughter (I think) who had no time for her and kept her alone in the laundry room. That's when she started plucking. She's let her feathers all grow back in 3 X since we got her...but then something will set her off again and overnight she'll be back to where she was. We can't tell what triggers her to pluck. Otherwise she seems happy enough - not sure what else I can do for her. She's a great talker.

I have some older pics somewhere...I'll see if I can find them! I'm on dial-up (out in the boonies) which slows things down for me a bit.
