Hi from the Tri-cities!

Postby skcopland » Fri Jun 25, 2010 1:24 pm

Hey everybody,

My name is Savannah, and I recently brought a brown headed parrot into my home named Basil. I noticed that this board has a HUGE poi following - mostly senegals - but all the same, seemed like a good place to be! I grew up with many animals; most

I got Basil from Exotic Wings and Pet Things (I think some of you from Ontario may have heard of it) about 3 weeks ago. He's settling in very nicely, still doesn't like being in his cage but we are working on it! Are there any other brown head owners on here?

Anyways, looking forward to meeting you all!

Welcome to the board Savannah.

Brown Heads are so adorable ... I'm considering one as my next bird. Saw them for the first time in person at Exotic Wings and Things about a month ago - may have actually seen Basil when I was there :)

Yes, there definitely is a poicephalus following here on the board. I have a 5 year old Red-Bellied and a 4 year old Senegal and they are such great little birds. They are great in size and have BIG personalities.

I'm curious, how was your experience buying a bird from Exotic Wings and Things? I was quite impressed when I was in the store and am seriously considering going through them when I'm ready to add another bird to my flock.

And when you get a chance you'll have to post picture of Basil.

Hi and welcome!

I've purchased things from Exotic Wings in the past, when I went to the Canadian Parrot Conference in Guelph. Mark was always very nice. I'd be curious to actually see their parrot nursery.

You might be the only brown head owner here, I don't think I remember seeing any more, but I might be wrong. I have a Senegal, two Red-bellieds and two Meyer's, as well as a Lovebird.

Oh and I agree with Izver, do post a picture of Basil when you have a chance.

I thought the whole experience was very good - I talked to Lisa mostly through emails for two weeks before I actually went and picked up my birdie and she was fairly helpful. He's a very well socialized bird as far as I can tell (he's the first hand fed bird I've ever owned so I don't have comparison). He steps up without command very readily, he likes to get his head scratched, and tolerates petting but would really prefer not to be. He is "beaky", but I think that is his age, and seems to just like to explore and test things with his mouth before proceeding forward ;)

The store has so many toys there! I only got to see a couple of the rooms; they didn't have any of the bigger birds, but lots of conures and brown heads that's for sure, and several african greys. They also have a little boarding area where you can keep your birds and they will take care of them if you are away for a weekend or something. Obviously that wouldn't be my first choice (concerns of catching bugs from other birds, them not being used to the level of noise, etc) but its good to know just in case. They have a decent selection of cages too.

I think brown heads are actually a lot more common in this area then in other places. It seems a lot of people view them as rather rare, whereas I've heard of at least two breeders nearby. I got a chance to meet a senegal too and they are also very sweet! Quite similar in temperment from what I saw.

And pictures, I will post some soon! Just need to borrow my roommates fancy camera for an evening :)
