Hi All! I'm new to the forum...

Postby SELIGMANS » Wed Jun 30, 2010 8:28 am

Hi! I'm owned by a 4-year old male Green Cheek Conure, Kiwi, and a 12-year old rescue, she is a Hahn's (mini) Macaw (aka Red Shouldered Macaw), and her name is Paradise. I'm also owned by 2 Cocker Spaniels (both rescues). My hubby and I love all of our animals, they are EVERYTHING to us, our family, they are our children. They are our passion. I will be searching for some answers in this forum on tips and training advice on how we can work more with Paradise. We may be looking to add another feathered member (another rescue) to our family but we want to make an infomed decision first. Looking forward to connecting with this group! Tweet Tweet! :amazon:

Hi Mandy, thank you so much for your quick reply and the warm welcome!

I see you have a beautiful Amazon and have read some of your posts.

We were looking to adopt another bird but we want to make an informed decision before we do so. When we adopted Paradise, we knew we where in for a challenge as she is set in her ways and we've had her for 1 1/2 years now. We knew she had some aggression issues but didn't realize just how bad till she came to live with us. The aggression issue seems to be mostly toward women in general. She LOVES my husband and will not bite him and she pretty much lets him do anything with her. She seems to tolerate me and I try to work as much as possible with her. I have been taking steps in doing things with her and she now finally perches on my finger/hand when I bring her in the shower for a nice mist with me (but she also bathes on her own). She steps up for me ONLY when she wants to, she pretty much will let me know when she will bite, so I have to use a ladder if needed. It can be very frustrating at times with me but I will never give up on her, she is here to stay with us forever. She is very close to my hubby as he is to her also. Kiwi was our first bird and he is my baby and lets me do ANYTHING with him. He is very bonded to me but also loves my hubby. My hubby LOVES kiwi too. We only know some of Paradise's past. We are her 4th (and forever) home. From what we know, her first owner of 10 years passed away and it was her second home where she was in a toxic environment, and her third home where her the foster parents, and she is finally with us for good. I would love to learn clicker and target training but it seems complicated. Any advice?

Sorry for posting here but I wanted to reply to you. I will also be posting this an another concern we have under the right discussion topic.

Thank you so much again, I'm glad I joined this froum! Looking to seeing you around here! ;)

By the way, she seems to be getting a little better with me with time but she still has so much more to go! We are doing all that we can to try to socialize her and help curb her aggression and we will always continue to work with her.

Thanks again,
Sabrina

Hi Joan and Marnie! Thank you so much for the welcome and for your kind words. I believe in rescuing since there are so many innocent and beautiful souls out there needing new homes. I will be posting picies of my fids as soon as I can. I am looking forward to learning as much as possible about our beloved feathered friends and interacting with this group. Funny, it's an inside family joke with us about Paradise. Her name is not suited with her aggressive behavior at all but we love her just the same. She knows her name really well and has a quite extensive vocab. We know once thing for sure, is that her name is Paradise so we did not want to change her name. She is my little bit of "Paradise"...lol Gotta love them! :D

Take care,
Sabrina

Thanks, Ptuga72! Yes, Green Cheeks are a lot of fun and amazing! I love my Kiwi to pieces, he will always be my baby. Paradise is very special to me, too. Although she is only attached to my hubby I still love her, nonetheless. Thanks for your support. I think that as long as I give her the best I got, we will be okay. She has let me pet her on her head/nape on some occasions, which is rare so I know deep down she has a soft spot somewhere for me, I just have to dig a little deeper to find out how to win her love.
