Hi all!!

I'm new to this forum! So my birdie is an interesting story. I noticed a Green Parrot in the backyard last Wednesday so I put some pecans & water our for it. It was still there Thursday, so I fed it more & spent some time in the backyard to see what the bird would do. Later I checked to make sure it didn't belong to my neighbor & she ended up giving me an outdoor cage for the bird. When my boyfriend brought it into our yard the bird ended up flying & landing on the ground, so I sat near it & mocked it when it started dancing. Then the bird came over to me, climbed up my back & sat on my shoulder. Now I haven't named the bird because I'm still checking around for its owner & I don't know the sex of the bird yet either. But even if I have to give this one up, my boyfriend & I decided that we will get another bird. Ooo this bird is a Red Lored Amazon Parrot & it might be a boy according to one thing I read about eye color. We are going to take it to the vet soon to check for a microchip, sex & overall check up. So I'm here to learn how to train this birdie especially since it's starting to be very aggressive toward my boyfriend, especially when it's sitting right near me or on my shoulder :swaying:

Hi and welcome to the forums. The first thing I would point out is that you should make every effort to find the owner and not get too attached initially. Many of us would move heaven and earth to get our birds back if they were lost so please spare a thought for the owner.

I'd also be careful of letting an unfamiliar bird on your shoulder. If it decides to, it could do quite some damage to your ear!

Hello and welcome!

I have to second Banksie, please do everything possible to find the bird's owners. Put out classifieds, call the vets in your city, put up posters, just do everything possible to find them. Remember to spread out your search, even a clipped bird can travel great distances if the conditions are right. I don't mean to sound negative, I'm glad you're willing to care for the bird while you have it, just the thought of losing my own breaks my heart.

Remember that you can always go out and buy your own parrot after this one finds its home.

Yea I am a total animal lover so I truly understand how devastated the owner must be. Today I took the bird to one of our humane societies so they could log that we found the bird and they took pictures for their records. They also gave us suggestions of where to post found bird ads & I'm open to more. We also spoke with a woman there who is very knowledgeable about birds and she told me that this parrot is not a Red Lored Amazon Parrot. She told me that people will bleach their feathers to get them across the border :( So I need to do a little more research. Oo I have to take my statement above back about him being "very aggressive" I don't know birds well & my boyfriend told me that he isn't lunging to bite he is just being vocal because he's scared. So we've realized to slow down when we approach him & we always feed him safflower seeds, he loves them! & then after a bit when we ask him to come off the cage he does without an issue. So we'll see if we find the owner.

You know I just did some reading & I really do think it's a Red Lored Amazon but I'm sure the vet will know when we eventually take it.

If you can post a picture of the bird I bet one of us could identify it for you.

I will eventually post a picture but I didn't post one on purpose because I'm still trying to find the owner & it would be really easy for someone to see my picture & then try to claim the birdie. It was also recommended by the humane society to make the person describe the bird & its traits to prove it's the owner. But thanks!! :swaying:
