Grandmother to a Senegal Parrot

Postby TinaDeMars » Tue Jul 13, 2010 2:53 pm

My daughter was given a Senegal parrot:senegal: for her birthday this last January. This bird was previously owned by my mother. My father bought this bird, Charlie, for my mother as a Christmas present in 1993. They also had the papers and all on this bird and when the bird was given to my daughter, Charlie's papers went with it.
This bird is now at least 17 years old now. Just recently, within the last 2 months my daughter, in cleaning out "Charlies" cage had run across something totally unexpected. "Charlie" it seems is a "Charleen". As of this typing, Charleen has laid 5 eggs :hatching: . My daughter has removed them, she broke one so she has 4 of them. There is no other senegal around so no chance of fertilizing the eggs.
What can my daughter do to stop this? and WHY did it take Charleen so long in laying eggs?
I had read, on this internet, that possibly leaving the eggs in with her will maybe stop her laying and or to remove her to a quieter room and darker area would help also. What can be done and is this harmful for the bird?
Between my family, parents and sister we have had and still have a macaw :macaw: (who also recently has laied eggs was also my parents and given to my sister), a half-moon parrot, an amazon (passed away last year), love birds, :gray: African grey, and a cockateil. So we are not totally unknown to the bird issue, just their laying eggs and how to fix this if this will become harmful.
Personally I believe the 2 birds that had started laying the eggs, the macaw and this senegal, were both in my parents possion and my father was rather mean to them, cussing and yelling at them, and I believe when they were given away into a better enviorment to where they are safer and treated better, they feel this lessing of the tension and are responding by laying eggs. Possible?
I would really like some help in telling my daughter how to handle this. thanks all in advance.

My experience with egg-laying is mostly with cockatiels (and chickens) but I leave the eggs with the hen until she stops sitting on them. If a hen lays too many eggs - she can easily become calcium deficient and we want to avoid that situation (it can be treated, but it's just healthier to avoid it altogether).

If the eggs are not fertile, they won't hatch. Eventually (after 2-3 weeks sometimes) she'll give up sitting on them, and hopefully won't lay another clutch. But if you remove them one at a time, some birds will keep laying in attempt to have a full clutch of eggs to sit- and this is what leads to the calcium deficiency.
Every parrot has a duty: To reduce the world to toothpicks.
