I am brand new and shiny

Postby Wikiwalker » Wed Aug 18, 2010 11:45 pm

Hi, I'm nineteen, I am going to community college for art (working on my portfolio so I can hopefully get into a larger art school with a big scholarship), and I work in a deli (yes, it turned me practically vegetarian, no my parents are not happy about that).

I've had a male pacific parrotlet named Ransome for about three years, I got him when he was almost a year old and the pet store I got him from hadn't handled him much (they're good with birds, but they don't usually handle their smaller birds very much), so i was a little afraid to interact with him because he was so scared of hands.

Anyway, I found this forum and I've been reading a lot about clicker training on here. I've been working with Ransome for about a week and I'm so happy with the results, before I'd given up hope of ever getting him to step up from his cage and now he targets . . . fairly well, at least he looks like he's having fun  and he loves getting treats.

Also I've been wanting to get a senegal parrot (I met one at a pet store where I was actually looking for a pionus, further research into the species led me here) and I have met an obstacle, also known as my parents. They know nothing about birds, in fact they don't get why I like small animals at all. Here in redneckville it's either a horse, or a dog, anything else is worthless and pointless to own and you should absolutely never pay over four hundred dollars for it (they even freaked out some over the 185$ I payed for Ransome).

But I should really stop ranting. Here I am, Hi!

Welcome to the board! Gald to know you've joined the flock, and hope you continue to work on clicker training. It's so fun what you can do with it!

Your post attracted me too but for different reasons! I too once was a brand new and shiny art student (now a jaded art teacher ;) ) and also worked in a deli, thereby also becoming vegetarian! Mmmm - headcheese...

Anyhoo, welcome and good luck with your portfolio. :)

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I have noticed this... I am not a Senegal fan, actually...most birds species I honestly would love to have, but senegals don't appeal to me at all...along with most other pois. I AM A HEATHEN! lmao

LOL! :D Me too...but I can just make a new screen name, heehee! I think it's the general "nippiness" of pois that throws me. They are lovely birds, but I would never get one unless it was a rescue bird no one else wanted. I am a softy like that. ;)
