Hello from Karachi, Pakistan

Postby BlazeNGlory » Mon Aug 30, 2010 8:13 am

Hello Everyone :) I am an American living in Karachi, moving to Islamabad this month. We have had our 2 Sun Conures, Blaze and Glory, for about a month now. Im still learning all I can about them. In the States I had a lovely Cocktail named Esmerelda with a charming personality. We played all sorts of games and she loved to be on my shoulder, especially whilst I was teaching in 2nd grade. Always quiet, never a problem. I even took her to a movie. She sat thru it till almost the end and started eeping loudly, but calmed down soon after. So this is my experience with birds, no difficulties and loads of love from her. The sun conures are a handful, but in a good way. Im enjoying finding different foods for them to eat and trying to come up with some healthy chew toys. They both love and adore all our close friends who come to visit, wanting to crawl all over them or just happy sitting on a shoulder. I dont know how train them, but from what I read its like teaching a classroom of children the practices and procedures for the new year. Since that is what I know, thats what Ive done with them. In the month we have had them, they have learned about 8 commands and respond to them. Sharp birds to pick up so quickly! We have also set a routine for them, bedtime/ wake up/ and breakfast. Am trying to set some others thru the day, but our days change so much at present. Its funny to watch them fuss when they have to go night night when everyone is visiting.

I would appreciate any information given as Im reading all I can. We live in Pakistan and it just doesn't have the kind of toys and foods as in the States. So I have a question about beans. If I soak the Lima beans (they like the white beans best) overnight, do I still have to cook them? Im getting them from the package. We were given some mix of dried beans the shop owner called Energy Food to soak overnight and give in the morning for just a few hours.

Thanks for any help or info :amazon:

I'm not sure about the Lima beans...but welcome aboard!

Would you be able to bring them with you if you return to the US?

Not sure about how to bring to the States just yet, still working on taking them to Islamabad. I read today that the airlines allow the birds to travel in the cabins with the owners. That is such a relief to know. Now the question is how to travel with 2 sun conures who will screech when they are scared. Hopefully as long as my husband and I are there they will be ok. So we need a small cage to bring on the flight?

Cover it with a towel and hopefully they'll just sleep. The decompression of flight should make them a bit hypoxic and even more sleepy.

Thanks for the suggestion. They sleep when its absolutely dark. Its a 1.5 hr flight so not so bad.
