Hi! Just got a "Re- Homed" Illiger's Mini Macaw

Postby KristinShaye » Fri Sep 03, 2010 12:56 pm

I found the forum while looking up ways to handle your parrot online . I now have a Illigers Mini Macaw and she is awesome. She was not handled in her previous home but the owners were great parents. They had a dog that liked to eat birds so they were afraid to risk her getting out and getting hurt. She talks to me alot but does not trust me at all so I am trying the clicker training / target step up trick first. This forum is great btw! My name is Kristin and I work at a local veterinary clinic in Alabama. I have had experience with birds before because I use to work at a pet store.

Hello and welcome! We'd love to see photos of your Illigers! Mini Macaws are a lot of fun.

Welcome! I'm in Alabama too! and I also have 3 birds that come from previous homes. What area are you in(north, south?) I think I'm more north than south.

How long have you had her now?

I have had her since last saturday. She comes out of her cage and lets me give her food and treats. She's has potential to be a very friendly bird but it will take alot of training on my part. I live in Oxford Al.

I want to take pictures of her but I want her first picture to be of me actually holding her :).

I hope that is soon! I sent you a PM with an avian vet rec for that area, if you don't already have one ;)

Hi and Welcome!
I love the mini-macaws. I looked at getting an Illigers but I could not find any breeders in Canada. I am waiting for my Hahn's Macaw to wean sometime in October. :D

Good luck with her.....patience is a virtue!

Thanks! Being patient is the hardest part. She tolerates me which is good and she lets me give her treats but as far as touching her goes...she does not like that at all.
