Hi pchela. Glad to hear Rupert's making some progress. :)

I had Aaron in for a fecal test this morning & asked my vet who they recommended in case of an after hours emergency. Here's the link to the place:

I've actually been in there a couple of times over the years. Both for cat related emergencies though, not bird. My vet said that although no one in town has an avian vet on staff for emergencies, this clinic is for exotics (although if no avian vet, not sure what help that is) & that in the case of a serious bird emergency they contact the Research Pet & Bird Hospital. So, not a whole lot of help, but at least it's something.

Thank you! Even if there is no bird vet, at the very least it's much closer to my house than the one I went to. And, if they handle some exotics, perhaps I wouldn't have to be the one to hold the poor bird down with a towel at least.

Good evening! I am new to austin and am trying to get to know people with parrots here. We have a male red bellied who is a rescue and has respiratory problems (stuffy nose), looking for advice and a parrot community! Thanks!

Hi there! :) Hope you come to enjoy Austin. It's been home to me over 20yrs, & other than maybe Seattle or Portland, I can't imagine living anywhere else! Where did you get your red-belly from? If you haven't already found a good vet, I would suggest Dr. Anneliese Strunk at Research Pet & Bird Hospital. She's an avian vet, & although young, is very good. There used to be an Austin Parrot Society that was pretty active, but they've gone kinda dormant for the time being. One of the founders (an animal behaviorist & a great resource) just recently moved away, & the president has been having some pretty serious health issues. You can check out the website, http://austinparrotsociety.org/, but there's not much activity there. They also have a Meetup group, http://www.meetup.com/AustinParrotSociety/, but honestly, I don't see much activity there lately either. Pchela (the other Austin-ite in this string) is a great resource, but I don't know how often she chimes in any more. I'm guessing you've probably had other parrot owners suggest a high quality air purifier for your baby? Other than that, I'm afraid I just don't have the experience to be of much practical help. Try Dr. Strunk. Can't hurt to have her at least take a look at your bird.
