Hi all, another newbie

Postby funky crunch » Sat Oct 09, 2010 8:24 am

Hi guys,

just joined and thought I would say hello from Scotland!

I own a 6 month old green cheeked conure called Bootsy Collins, he was hand reared and is just a total darling.

We have also just brought home a Senegal Parrot, woman had 4 birds that she is trying to re home. She is also giving away a huge cage that has 2 separate compartments so we are thinking about taking her cockatiel and ringneck as well and the big cage, at least we will put the time into looking after the birds. They all look super healthy and have been checked by a vet recently which is re-assuring, they are all about 7 years old.

The cockatiel seems friendly and is tame but both the Senegal and ringneck who were housed together and seem to be really friendly with each other will take a bit more work to get back to friendlieness. The owner took them from someone as they didn't have the time to spend with them so I think they have not been out much or been handled much for quite a while. The Senegal seems very wary but it's only been a day so hopefully it will settle in.

I've been reading lots of topics about taming and have a fair bit still to read but any tips would be most welcome. After a few days I'll try letting the Senegal out and see how it goes, the room he is in is safe and roomy so plenty of room to fly, I'm just worried about getting him back in the cage (if he comes out that is) I would like to avoid towling him to keep stress levels as low as possible.

Anyway, I'll try to post some updates on how it all goes and if we decide to take the other birds as well.

be well all

Steven

thanks guys, that's Bootsy when he first came, he has filled out a bit now and is totally part of the family, I had no idea how friendly birds could be, I was always a cat person.

I've ordered a clicker so I can start training the Senegal, (named Sinbad when we got him - Is it wise to change a birds name??) there is some really good info on this forum about target training so hopefully I can turn Sinbad around and help him to be friendly coz it's a very big beak he has

I might try to teach Bootsy some tricks as well, although this isn't that important for me as long as he's happy and friendly then I'm cool. :P

some hard work ahead

Thanks for the welcome Titanius, Mr Darcy and sllywbbt32, yes I love Conures, Bootsy Collins is a total acrobat and keeps us well entertained. He also seems totally unaffected by the new addition which is good.

A little update on Sinbad the Sennie.

He has been here just under a week now, and I have been following Michaels guide to taming here on the forum. Steadily approaching the cage etc. He really has calmed down a lot. A week ago he would freak out if you went near the cage!

The clicker I ordered arrived so I stepped up the training a little, after simple targets involving fruit at the end of the chopstick he is now taking seeds from my hand without any attempt to bite. Maybe he isn't hungry or thinks it's a game but he throws the seed away and waits for the next one, it's pretty funny.

Anyway, thanks for the guide Michael, it's given me a good idea of how to go about things and seems to working well so far. I'm really pleased and I really hope I can get to the stage that he steps up and lets me scratch his head.

I'm really enjoying reading about everyone's experiences and the love for birds on this forum is quite brilliant.

be well
