hello

Postby Jenny » Wed Oct 20, 2010 1:51 pm

Hello all. I too have been a little remiss in formally introducing myself - my apolgies. I started as a guest to this forum for a couple of weeks, and was amazed at the amount of useful info I found on it. Thanks so much to all of you. I finally registered as a member a week or two ago.

I am an animal lover & have had dogs & cats my entire life. However, this is the first time I've ever cared for a bird. My grey pied cockatiel, Aaron, is a rescue. A friend of mine was in a local park w/her husband when she heard an unusual bird whistle. She looked up into a nearby tree & saw Aaron. He followed along behind them as they walked along below the trees. My friend sat down underneath one of the trees, & Aaron flew right down to her. He wouldn't let her touch him, but he wouldn't go away either. My friend's hubby volunteered his shirt, & my friend threw it over Aaron. She said Aaron never struggled & was even calm on the drive back to her home. She set Aaron up in a temporary cage. My friend knew I'd talked about getting a bird about a year ago, & as she was not able to keep Aaron, I was the first one she called after not getting much of a response to her numerous "found bird" notices.

So here we are! I've had Aaron about 3 months & it's been a huge, although exciting & enjoyable, learning experience. Oftentimes, I am worried about how little I know about caring for birds, but I'm trying to educate myself as much as possible, & as I said earlier, this forum has been & I trust will continue to be a valuable tool. Plus, I don't have any friends w/birds, so this is a place I can run on, & on, ad nauseum about Aaron & know that no one is wondering when I'll shut up so we can discuss something they consider more interesting!! :D

ah, a helpful suggestion already - thank you!! Yes, I have taken Aaron to the vet. Thankfully, all he had was a bacterial infection. We just finished antibiotics last Friday - now I can worry over whether or not he ends up w/a yeast infection.

Aaron obviously was never handled much, so the vet visits were pretty stressful for him. & he wasn't at all pleased w/my holding him every evening & expecting him to take his meds. I was amazed though, because two different times toward the end of the meds time-frame, he took the syringe w/o my having to hold him & since the amount of medication he was receiving was so tiny, I was able to give him his dose before he let go. I mean, a lot of dogs & cats are smart enough to avoid you when you get their meds prepared/gathered, but I've never had a pet learn that it's gonna happen anyway, so they might as well make it easier on themselves! Maybe that behaviour isn't all that unusual to those of you familiar w/birds, but it blew my socks off. & it wasn't like he thought the meds were a tasty treat - you could tell he didn't like it by all the beak scraping he did after being dosed!

As for pictures, I'd love to show Aaron off, but I've never been one for taking photos - hard as it may be to believe, I don't own a camera & my phone doesn't have one. That may be changing fairly soon though, & if it does, I'll be sure to share some pix of my lovely boy. :)

Maybe he was handfed as a baby, and he recognizes the syringe as a good thing?

I only got my cockatiel in July, and he is such a joy! He hates strangers though, he's just a mama's boy! I'm sure in the next following months your bond will grow stronger and stronger.

maybe - that didn't even cross my mind! but he was a real touch-me-not for the first month & a half or so (he's rapidly warming up though). If he was handfed as a baby, wouldn't he be more comfortable/familiar w/hands & being held? I know absolutely nothing about hand-rearing chicks.

My cockatiel doesn't let other people hold him. He's only bonded to me. Your bird might of been bonded to a person before he flew away or was released. Plus, you don't know how old he is, it might of been a while since he was handfed.
