Hello from the UK

Postby snakesentwined » Wed Oct 27, 2010 1:35 pm

Hello everyone

I'm new to the board - and to keeping parrots - but we are hoping that we will find lots of advice and ideas here.

We already share our home with two siamese cats, a couple of Corn snakes and a large aquarium - and so we were wary of adding a feathered companion, even though we have always wanted to. However, with the advice and support of several long-term parrot-guardians we have now made the leap - and are now the proud surrogate dads to a beautiful (and very strong-willed) 14 week-old yellow-crested amazon called Isis.

I can't believe how quickly she has stolen our hearts! She has only been with us a week and is already spoilt with love (if that were ever possible!): she has a lovely big cage, piles of toys - and lots of supervised play-time (including flight, since the breeder made us promise not to have her clipped - and seeing her fly, I can't ever imagine depriving her!). She is even starting to make attempts at her first words - and loves playing step-up and being cuddled and crooned.

regards
David & Geoff - Ra, Seth and Isis

Hello & welcome! :D

My story is very similar to yours as I have kitties, so even though I wanted a bird, I too was afraid to indulge myself. Also, Aaron, my cockatiel, is my first bird. I've found that having kitties w/a (flighted) bird requires a great deal of supervision, but has not been impossible. It is admittedly not ideal, but it is the situation which exists!

& I know what you mean about stealing one's heart - birds manage to do that in a very special way.

That's a great photo of you w/your lovely girl!

Welcome to the forum! And Isis is beautiful! An Amazon is my dream bird, but I just added a third bird on the weekend and I'm content with my three Poicephalus parrots.

Thank you for the kind welcomes everyone!

There has only been supervised introductions between the cats (Ra and Seth) and Isis - and they have to go out of the room when she is out and flying - but so far everyone is getting on very well. But then, being siamese, the cats are quick to learn - and we have already established a routine of them simply watching from a safe distance when we handle the snakes, ao it's just an extension of that.

I'm a librarian, so I'm also actually enjoying the researching and learning process - but I still have lots of questions, so I'm sure you'll be seeing a fair amount of me here ;)
