Getting A new bird!

Postby AliciaPo1 » Sat Nov 13, 2010 5:27 pm

Hi all!
I have few questions and im wondring if you all can help me get them answers. I am getting a new bird, and I think I want a conure. I want a conure because they are mediume sized, fun, energetic, and relitivly smart for their price (I dont care if the bird is really loud). One of my questions is, Will it be ok if I leave my conure all alone at home for 9 to 10 hours almost evey monday through friday(most days less and i will be home sat and sun). I will of corse leave the radio on, give him plenty of toys and i plan to get a large cage (36x27x54x). I also plan to spend all of the rest of the time I'm home with my bird. The other question I have is this, Is it ok if the birds main cage is in my room upstairs. I would do this to keep it safe from my cat when I am not at home. I plan to get a travle cage (14x11x16x) to take my bird with me around the rest of my house. Even with the travle cage the bird would be out around the rest of my house with me most of the time.

Thanks for you help!

That all sounds fine if you can keep your room quiet enough for your bird to get a good amount of sleep at night -- they want approaching 12 hours.

Most bird owners work, so most birds are alone a good chunk of the workday.

I love my :gcc: even if he is mad at me right now. They are a lot of bird in a small package and not as loud as some of the other conures.

Unless your cage is flimsy, or can easily be toppled over, or you're intending to keep it on the floor, (none of which I would think are likely w/a cage the size you mentioned) you shouldn't have to keep the bird's cage separated from the living space your cats occupy. I have a cage just a tad larger than yours in my living room, & my cats have access to that same room all day when I'm at work & all night. It sounds as though your cage is high enough that the cats can't jump up on top of it, & just be sure the cage isn't placed next to something the cats can climb & then jump down onto it.

I have only had my Maroon Belly, Merlin, for 2 months, but I wouldn't trade him for anything right now! He is so enjoyable to watch and interact with, and conures are very smart. I work during the day and Merlin is home by himself (unless you count the dog and 2 cats), and he seems fine so far in my living room, where the cats have access but don't spend all that much time. I have his cage in the living room, and I agree with Jenny that with the size of cage you mentioned, it should not have to be hidden in your bedroom because of the cat. Birds in general and conures especially like to be where the action is, even if they can't be a part of it. The room you spend the bulk of your time in should be where you place your cage.

Birds are a miracle because they prove to us there is a finer, simpler state of being which we may strive to attain.
