Good morning from our three and me :)

Postby sweetiekat57 » Sat Dec 04, 2010 1:23 pm

My husband and I live in Springfield, Missouri. We have the pleasure of the company of two cockatiels and one parrot we just adopted last night, and I don't really know which kind she is. Our cockatiels are a grey and white male , named Bert, and a yellow with orange cheeks, named Ernie. Our new parrot friend is green with a black mask, and blue and green tail feathers. Her name is Bandit, and we aren't sure how old she is, either, since the two people who owned her were a bit unsure how long they'd had her. One report is that she's about 10 to 15 years old, and they've had her since at least the early 2000's. The person who did own her is having to go to assisted living, and it was a hard thing for her to let her friend go, but my husband and I are going to keep her family updated and hopefully this will help with transition for both the family and Bandit.

Bert and Ernie are about 3 or 4 years old. We adopted them this past Spring from a lady who had rescued them from a neglectful situation. They're very sweet and well adjusted birdies. They sing a lot, and once in a while, the grey one, Bert, will say "hello".

The previous owner of Bandit said she used to talk until her mate died in 2006 and hasn't said much since. I am also understanding the bird has been in her cage probably most of her life. Bandit is losing feathers and pulling them out, probably from stress, but I am not sure if she just also could have a skin problem or her diet may have been suffering. Her cage was in poor condition, and it is too small for her. I would say Bandit is probably about 8"-10" in length, head to tail tip. Last night, apparently, she pulled out the last of her tail feathers. I cleaned up her cage today. We're just starting out, and we are working to find out what kind of parrot she is, the best things to do for her, and help her adjust. She already calmed down a lot since we picked her up last night. Her home was very noisy and I think the stress and the noise were getting to her. All this being said, we know her owner was just not able to care for her very well any longer due to age and failing health, and I do not fault a person for such a thing, at all. They were doing a kind thing in finding a good, loving home for their feathered friend.

I guess you can tell by my long intro I care about our feathered friends, and all people and animals in general, and we are glad to be here and hopefully gain some good knowledge on caring for our three feathered friends. Blessings! - Barbie and David :gcc:

I think you're probably right on, Zazanomore, that's what I was going to suggest also.

:gcc: Thank you very much for the link! Yes, I believe she is a Nanday. I would love to find a way to get her to stop picking at her feathers. Actually, in the week we've had her, she has calmed down in that area quite a bit. We are feeding her pellets now, and we offer her fruits and veggies daily. We just did pick up a cage that is 26 x 29 x 45. We are planning to clean it up - it's had some wear. There's indication that it had some rust but not badly, and my husband is going to use a wire disk on his drill to strip it down and get all the weathered material off, clean it up, find the right kind of bird-safe primer and paint, and she'll have a new home. We are wondering if anyone may know of some suggestions for bird-safe primer and paint for her cage. Thanks so much for all your help! She's going to do wonderfully, with tlc and a cage upgrade.

Welcome! I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of your flock!

I think you'd need to send the cage out to be powder-coated... I don't think there are any safe paints a Nanday couldn't chip off. Was it originally colored? That's probably powder coat. Try posting in the "Housing" area... I think I saw a thread a while back about "repainting" a cage. Maybe an auto painter?
