Hello :3

Postby Matanimat » Sun Dec 12, 2010 1:39 pm

Good day, everyone. I'm not very new to birds or to forums; I've been lurking about for a while and decided to join today. So... I'm already familiar with some of your birds. I have a budgie, named Meme. He's about 10 or 12 years old; I'm 18, so he's been with us for most of my life. He was bought at a pet store and, until I acquired a second bird, was rather neglected. No one spent time with him very much or cleaned his cage. But now I know MUCH better and give him everything he ought to have been given ages ago. He's very well behaved, but isn't too interested in me unless I have millet or he's in his cage. When he's out, he's always near my lovebird's cage; he tries to flirt with him and Paulie tries to fight him. It's very silly. Meme's also working on saying a few words- he's got the intonation down. I can't touch him anywhere but his feet and have him feel comfortable, but I can kiss his wings. I don't have too many pictures of him, as he's rather afraid of my mac. The only time I catch him is when he's in his cage.

Paulie was found outside by a friend's family last June. We live in mid-state New York, so he's definitely not a native bird here. They kept him for around a month before asking for a new home for him on facebook. I read up on lovebirds, parrots in general, and arranged to pick him up a few days later with a much too small cage. (The man at the pet store assured me he would be fine in it, but I discovered that he needed a flight cage.) He would step up on a perch, when bribed, when I first brought him home. When I let him out of his cage, it would take hours (three, mostly) to get him back in his small cage. There were a lot of mistakes, I think, in the beginning. Now he has a cage that's just about my height and will go in their voluntarily and on the first try, if I need to get him in myself. He also wouldn't land on me for anything when he first came home. Now he chooses and loves to be on me/my laptop almost constantly when out. The laptop, though, I think he's on for the warmth. And to take keys off of the keyboard- I'm missing over 20. So, we do have a very good relationship now. I refer to him as a he, but I don't know for sure.

Hello Matanimat, (where do ya'll come up with these crazy names?) welcome to the forum and welcome Meme and Paulie, always nice to see younger folks with birds. There are lots of good topics on here to learn more about your pets. Or maybe teach some of us older dogs new tricks.

Welcome to the forum! I love hearing of older budgies. Not a lot of people believe they actually can live as long as cats or dogs.

Thank you- people are always so surprised when I tell him he's at least ten years old. My vet says that he doesn't look his age one bit and he's definitely not a grouchy man.
